What Happens When Someone With Zero Artistic Experience Attempts To Be A Cartoonist

Potential minor in art perhaps?

Though I have zero artistic experience other than drawing doodles on class syllabi, this is my incredibly amateur attempt at turning a picture of my boyfriend and I, into famous cartoon styles.

If you don't know me, you may cringe at these and wonder why I am putting the outcome of being on my ADD medication for public display. If you DO know me, then prepare to be either really confused about what you thought my talents were limited to, or you may just feel second hand embarrassment for me.

The original photo and inspiration for this "art project"

I would like to publicly apologize to my boyfriend for turning him into various cartoons without his consent. I would also to thank him for being a good sport and allowing me to use him as my muse.

Quick disclaimer: If you happen to notice how in most of these I neglect to draw myself an arm, I have no excuse other than to say that I am an abstract artist. I am also sorry to disappoint, but if you thought these drawings would have legs, you are wrong. As I said, I don't draw, and I wasn't going to ruin these drawings by pretending like I had any clue on how to properly draw a thigh or a hand for the matter. Thank you.

1. "The Simpsons"

This was my first drawing that really sparked the whole idea. As I stated earlier, I honestly was just wired from taking my ADD meds, and instead of packing for college like a responsible adult, I decided to take that extreme focus and turn it into art. And thus, a picture of my boyfriend and I from semi-formal was somehow transformed into my dad's favorite cartoon.

2. "Family Guy"

Going off of a similar theme in television, you can see my train of thought for how different cartoons inspired me. I had originally wanted to turn my boyfriend into Peter Griffin and myself into Lois, but then I realized that anyone could simply draw a cartoon character that already existed. Therefore, in an odd attempt to challenge myself, I tried to imitate the show's cartoon style while emphasizing physical characteristics from the original photo. I also am floating.

3. "Bob's Burgers"

Currently laughing at how ridiculous this one is. I really have nothing to say about this one other than that I think I perfectly grasped the show’s chin-to-neck characteristics.

4. "South Park"

I almost didn’t include this drawing because of just how mediocre it is. Believe it or not, though the drawing itself may look like a 5-year-old's anniversary gift to her parents, I actually found “South Park” to be the most difficult style to recreate. The hardest part was most definitely drawing the heads as perfect circles without the use of a compass.

5. "Rugrats"

Though we are once again floating figures, and I have managed to give myself six fingers and a broken wrist, it was pretty nostalgic to create myself as a 2018 version of Angelica Pickles. Shoutout to all the 90s kids (or fetuses).

6. "The Fairly OddParents"

This one really just is Cosmo and Wanda in dress attire. Not much creativity to it and to be honest, the sketch looked a lot better before I colored it in. Either way, despite what one may assume, I did, in fact, freehand these drawings.

Well, that was my art gallery. Hopefully I inspired you to go out and try a new hobby. I don't see myself as a cartoonist in the future, but I definitely will hold my newfound artistry to a greater standard on the back of my quizzes and homework.

The 5 Painfully True Stages Of Camping Out At The Library

For those long nights that turn into mornings when the struggle is real.

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate
Mental Floss

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."

As this semester wraps up, students can’t help but be stressed about finals. After all, our GPAs depends on these grades! What student isn’t worrying about their finals right now? It’s “goodbye social life, hello library” time from now until the end of finals week.
