It's an interesting question no doubt, it's been answered in different ways. The question is at this rapid rate to which humans are using gas in their automobiles, and the fact that we have to eventually run out of gas, what will happen when we do run out of gas? Again this is not whether we run out of fuel or not, that is another argument for those interested in it, this is what happens when we do.
Do automobiles become extinct? What are the alternatives to gas? Let me give a few possible scenarios that could happen in our world—not saying that they will happen.

- Developed countries will prevail and others will suffer. Countries like the United States have been heavily investing in alternative energy, as an alternative to gas already which is fantastic—not trying to be sarcastic. This will benefit them in the future. Where other countries will fail, because they only rely on gas, the United States at least to an extent will be able to function.
There are a few quips that come with it, though—imagine the problem what happens if gas ran out tomorrow? Electric cars are expensive, they have their own multitude of problems and frankly, there is not enough of them out there. Sure society can function to a certain extent no doubt, but really only few will be able to afford it. The best benefit is that though the capitalistic economy cheaper electric cars will appear and society goes on but no doubt there would be challenges ahead. - What happens to daily life? One thing that struck me in my anthropology class is when my teacher asked us to list items that were essential to living life in the real world. A lot of the basic stuff, of course, like water, food, etc. There was an unexpected entry, though— a car. I never really realized this but automobiles have become such a big part of society that they have become essential.
In the event we run out of gas, life changes big times, cars whether we like it or not will have to become luxury’s again. Jobs become a lot closer to home, services like amazon will start to die out, travel become a luxury again, traveling for business starts to become extinct, it is sort of a doomsday scenario, but it's totally possible.
Conclusion?
Is it going to happen? Maybe, maybe not. That is not for me to decide. The point I think I am trying to make, though, is two-fold. First the extinction of natural fuels to cars is totally possible, and if it were to happen, be ready because life will change drastically. This is not all negative, though, this also means we have to be able to come up with better scenarios and even the car was an alternative to buggies, there is an alternative to the automobile as well.
