What Happened In Vegas Isn’t Going To Stay In Vegas

An inspiring trip filled with lessons that I will always remember.

What Happened In Vegas Isn’t Going To Stay In Vegas

The summer before the senior year of college is often filled with many decisions: deciding which schools to visit, which graduate admissions tests to take and decisions about what to do after graduating from college. This summer has definitely been a stressful one for me between studying hard for my LSAT (Law School Admission Test), scheduling law school visits and doing work in the community, so when I found out I was getting a chance to go to Las Vegas practically for free, I jumped at the chance. I had to pay for my flight, but my hotel and registration for the conference I would be attending was paid for. I would be attending Freedom Fest, advertised as “the world’s largest gathering of free minds.” From the welcome to the closing ceremonies, I felt intellectually stimulated, and I learned so many things that I would not have if I did not attend this conference. In fact, prior to Freedom Fest, I would have never considered myself a Libertarian, but now, I’d say that I’m not far from it.

Many people go to the Grand Canyon and visit shops up and down the strip during their stay in Las Vegas. I did some of that stuff, but that was only part of the trip. I explored the strip during the nighttime, but during the day, I immersed myself in the conference experience. I feel like I could have gained more from the conference, but I am satisfied with the knowledge that I have gained from the lived experiences of others. The Libertarian candidate, Gary Johnson, was at the conference. Also, I had the privilege of meeting Steve Forbes at the Students for Liberty reception at the beginning of the conference. Since I never attended any Students for Liberty conferences prior to this one, I was not quite sure what to expect, but I will definitely say that Freedom Fest was not a disappointment. Upon my arrival to Planet Hollywood, I attended Student Mini-Conference sessions focused on student activism. Some of the stuff in these sessions I knew, but a lot of it was new to me. I was given the tools from people’s lived experiences to help me with my activism on my campus, as well as in my community.

Las Vegas was an unforgettable experience. If anyone has a chance to attend Freedom Fest, I highly recommend it. This will be one of the highlights of my summer, and I cannot think of a better time for me to have taken a leap of faith and attend this great conference. I am thankful to have the opportunity to have been able to attend this event. I am thankful for all of the experiences that I have had with my roommate. I am thankful for all of the people that I met at Freedom Fest. I am thankful to have had such a wonderful experience in Las Vegas that was filled with many lovely lessons that I will treasure forever. I will not forget them. I will not forget this trip.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
