In our ever-developing world, we rely heavily on transport for mobility. As a result, the transportation system has become one of the biggest sources of carbon emissions. In the last few decades, carbon emissions from transport alone contribute between twelve to seventy percent of air pollution in urban cities. This has led to over 200,000 deaths.
The Evolution of Green Urban Mobility
As a result, concerns have been raised by different organizations on how to reduce transport pollution. The advent of green urban mobility has raised more awareness about the reduction of pollution caused by transport systems. Below are a few green urban mobility options that are available in 2022:
Micro Mobility
Urban mobility is conceptually different from urban transport. Urban mobility seeks to enable people living in the same city to move from one place to another with relative ease — while having the green environment in mind. This is where micro-mobility comes in.
Micro mobility is simply the movement of people (via means of transportation) from one place through lightweight vehicles. That is vehicles that can usually carry just one person. Examples of such mobile means of transport include e-bikes, bicycles, e-scooters, and many others.
These vehicles do not require the consumption of fossil fuels and as such, cannot emit carbon into the atmosphere. Lately, one of the fastest-growing aspects of micro-mobility is the bike share system. We'll highlight it later in the article.
Electric Urban Transport
When you hear of this term, what probably comes to your mind? E-bikes and e-scooters, right? Well, it isn't just those two that are under this category. Electric cars, motorcycles, trucks, and others are under this category too. Electric vehicles fetch most of their energy from solar panels. This type of energy is considered "green" and environmentally friendly.
Bike Sharing System
The bike-share system has increasingly become one of the most preferred options for keeping a green urban environment. It is a micro-mobility transportation system. In this case, bicycles are put up for short-term rentals for a little fee or for free. In America and every other part of the world, bike share system service providers are well over two thousand. They are usually found in urban areas where air pollution is prevalent.
In a study conducted in China in 2016, it was found that the bike share system reduced the emission of carbon dioxide by more than twenty-five thousand tonnes. The study also pointed out the great importance of bike share in reducing energy consumption and air pollution in urban areas.
What Does the Future Hold?
While the green urban mobility options that are available in 2022 have been highlighted, it is important to look introspectively at the future and see what it holds for transportation systems. The future of transportation looks a lot greener than the present. Why not? More and more measures are being implemented to ensure that carbon emissions are drastically reduced in urban areas. Of course, the bike share system is leading this trend.
Our planet needs to become healthier and greener. To achieve this, we will need to look at the transportation sector and create strategic solutions to reduce the amount of pollution that comes from that sector.
