What Girls' Texts Really Mean

Texts can be difficult to decipher, especially if the person you're texting is not the same gender as you. Without further ado, here are a few common texts and their translations, from the perspective of a female who has sent them all at some point.

"Hey, what's up?"

Translation: I wanna see you.

"I don't even want to talk to you right now."

Translation: I actually do wanna talk, but it better be about the 2000-word apology you're writing as we speak.

"What do you mean?"

Translation: I know exactly what you mean but I want to hear you say it so that I can't be held accountable for misinterpreting it later on.

"Are you going out tonight?"

Translation: Invite me to pregame with you please

"Ok"

Translation: I'm mad at you for something, but I'm just waiting for the opportune moment to unleash the Kraken.

"Have fun!"

Translation: I hope you have a good time, but not as good as it would be if I were there.

"I'm just watching Netflix"

Translation: Come Netflix and chill with me ;)

"Smh"

Translation: You're skating on thin ice.

"Sure"

Translation: I'm 100 percent not okay with whatever you just suggested, but I'm trying to act laid back about it.

"Idk"

Translation: I have very strong feelings about this, but I'm sure as hell not going to make them clear.

"I'm busy."

Translation: I'm soooo not busy, but I'm just buying you time to formulate an apology.

"I can't say through text."

Translation: I'm about to tell you a piece of gossip, but I don't want written evidence of it.

"I miss you."

Translation: I love you.

"I love you."

Translation: I love you.

"Ily too"

Translation: I appreciate your friendship, but there's no way in hell I'm writing out the entire L-word to you.

"I'm already in bed."

Translation: Normally I would want to hang out, but I've had a rough day so just write me something sweet.

"Hmm"

Translation: I'm really disappointed by whatever you just said to me, but I know it's not your fault so I can't let on that I'm disappointed.

"I think I'm coming down with something."

Translation: Bring me soup without me having to ask for it.

"Fine"

Translation: I'm really mad at you (lol).

"How's the library?"

Translation: Stop being such a nerd and come hang out with me instead

"I should let you study."

Translation: I should let you study, but we both know I'm not going to.

In case you're unaware, "resting bitch face" is the term used to describe when a person's natural, expressionless face makes it look like they are mad at the world. Whether they are walking down the street or simply spacing out thinking about what to eat for dinner, it's very easy for others to assume that this person is either upset or mad at them. Because of this, those of us with Resting Bitch Face (RBF), and especially us women, have all experienced many of the same situations and conversations, including:

We've all had a crush before. Whether it leads to something or nothing, the process has all been the same. The awkward feelings, the stalking, and the stress of trying to keep this huge secret. The feeling of becoming a total spazz is something that cannot be avoided, and the most spazzy family that can relate to this feeling is the Belcher's.

At the tender age of 18, we are bestowed with the title of “adult.” For 17 years, we live under the rules and guidelines of our parents, school, and government, and to stray from any of those rules or guidelines marks us as a rebel. At 18, though, we must choose which college we want to go to or what career we want. We are allowed and encouraged to vote. We can buy lottery tickets and cigarettes. We can drop out of school, leave our household, and do other "adult" things. At 18, we start down a path of thinking for ourselves, when for the entirety of our lives other institutions have been mandated to think and do for us.

What about those of us who don't do it all in four years?

"College will be the best four years of your life" is a phrase that we have all heard growing up. College is painted as a magical place to us while we are in high school. A place you go to learn, meet your best friends and probably have the time of your life while all of this is going down. Four whirlwind years, where everything that you've known changes and you start to learn what it means to live on your own, have a job, etc. But what about those of us who don't do this all in four years? Major changes, hard courses, switching schools, career paths changing, these are just a handful of factors that could extend your four years to five, six or seven. There is nothing wrong with taking extra time to graduate, but returning as a fifth-year is a little different. Most of your best friends have most likely graduated and moved and while you may be one of the oldest undergraduates on campus, you might feel as awkward as a freshmen. A world that became home and comfortable to you is still there but it's slightly different than you've known it to be and you have to find a groove to fall into. These are thoughts you'll have as you look ahead to returning to your college campus, with a victory lap planned.
