Ah, Thanksgiving Break. A time for relaxation, too much food to comprehend, and plenty of family time. And (if you are like me) binge watching as much Gilmore Girls as possible to prepare for the release of A Year in the Life reboot special releasing on Netflix on November 25! Growing up, every weekday at 5 p.m. on the dot on ABC Family, my oldest sister and I would turn on the TV to the girls of Stars Hollow and spend an hour with two of our favorite ladies. Lorelai and Rory Gilmore were like our cool relatives growing up. We loved Gilmore Girls so much that, one year for Christmas, our mom bought us every season on DVD. Of course, this led to fights over whose turn it was with which season, but regardless we were able to watch our favorite girls whenever!
When Netflix announced they were bringing the whole Stars Hollow crew back together for a reunion, my sister immediately texted me with every link to every article she could find. We have been waiting for this since 2007 and it is hard to believe the day is less than a week away. To prepare for the release of the four 90-minute specials, I have been rewatching my favorite episodes and reflecting on all of the life lessons I learned from this iconic television show.
Lorelai taught me to be independent and strong willed. I see so much of my own mother in Lorelai, especially in the sense that both of these women have taught me to be self-reliant and confident with all that I do. Lorelai taught me to reach for any goal I set for myself, even if it meant making some sacrifices and hard decisions along the way. Success is in your hands if you are just willing to mold and shape it.
Rory taught me to never hold back. I know that is bizarre considering one of her love interests, Logan, had to give her the courage to take an actual jump of faith. But, I stand behind my statement. Spoiler alert, but the series ended with Rory not letting anything, even relationships, keep her from following lifelong dreams and aspirations. Rory taught me that knowledge is power and experience is worth every penny.
Together, they taught me there is no such as thing as too many pop culture references or too much caffeine. That with a little bit of junk food and a whole lot of laughter and anything is possible. That education goes beyond the lines of literature but is also deeply rooted in music and movies. And most importantly, the unconditional love between a mother and daughter is something that can never be broken.
The trailer for the new episodes has left me laughing, crying, and overflowing with excitement! Make sure to turn on Netflix with some Thanksgiving leftovers Friday and see what the girls are up to now!
