The daily struggle of being a communication major can take its toll. There's nothing us comm majors hate more than the stereotypes that surround our choice of study.
Communication is often viewed as being an "easy" major that people choose because they have no professional goals. Yes, there are more difficult fields of study, but that doesn't mean that communication courses are a walk in the park. Students who choose communication because they think it's easy are going about the college process the wrong way. They should go in undecided and take a plethora of different courses and then declare their major. As a comm major, you often hear that you will not get a job after college, and I think that's ridiculous.
Comm majors can be qualified for a variety of jobs such as working in PR, HR, social media, radio, television, etc. This is why I chose to study communication with a specialization in media because it allows me to hone different skills and become versatile. That's why it bothers us when people say our major is "useless" or "you won't get a job." As long as you work hard and make yourself stand out amongst other applicants, you'll get a job, and that goes for any field of study.
It does not matter if you're a biology, business or finance major — if you don't apply yourself and gain some sort of credibility, you will not get a job. Especially in communication, think about how you'll succeed or go further in life. You have to be able to verbally communicate what your goals are in interviews and express confidence non-verbally. If you have poor communication skills, you will not succeed in any type of organization.
I often hear that communication majors are lazy and I think it's the opposite. I have friends in my department who are some of the most driven and talented people I have ever come across. From writing, editing, broadcasting, and even just speaking, every communication major has a niche. Communication majors strive to make this world better every day by educating the masses whether that be through writing, advertising, film or other outlets.
We are the people who are not afraid to express ourselves and might have to work a little bit harder for the job that we want. But do not ever tell me I'm wasting my money or that my major is useless. For all of the communication majors out there, keep working hard and remember that words and actions change the world.
