What Ever Happened To Respect?

In light of the recent debates, one question still remains: has America lost the value of respect?

What Ever Happened To Respect?
Mark Ralston

The Oxford Dictionary defines debate as "A formal discussion on a particular matter in a public meeting or legislative assembly, in which opposing arguments are put forward and which usually ends with a vote."

With that in mind, there were no presidential debates this season. It's not even politically biased to say that there was little formality last night, and almost no discussion.

This begs the question, where has respect gone?

I'm not sure if this has been a value in decline for years or if I never really saw the days where mutual respect was a way of life, but I've always held the belief that discussions were about ideas, not insults. Your honor was something held above petty disagreements, and stooping to others level was to be avoided when possible. Two people can have completely different opinions, yet at the end of the day get together and joke around. These days however, it seems like something as stupid as the color of a dress (sorry to bring back that seething wound) can't be talked about with a verbal fight starting.

Why, you may ask, have we gotten to this point? Simply, it seems that this is a lost era. Whereas people used to find purpose in their work, family, service, and community, we are a society lacking in meaning. People are constantly searching for themselves, looking for any source that can tell them who they are (and believe me, there are an endless amount of people that will be glad to sell you an answer). Adults have less friends then before, especially men. Just giving people a chance to join a group and feel a sense of purpose and belonging feels like a lifesaver at times. This is how politics, fandoms, and sports have become such big parts of our culture.

This is also where the problem lies. The second you change from a supporter to a fan, just about anything your side says can be justified. Anything the other side says can be demonized. Don't be surprised for a second when people take advantage of this.

At the same time, you begin to create the sense of "the other". It's "us vs them", and things will only get better "if our side wins." Compromise goes out the window, and communion between groups becomes a pipe dream.

No matter who wins what, WE WILL ALWAYS HAVE PROBLEMS! There is no perfect solution for life, and we're in it for the long run. So just agree to disagree, and talk about something else if you have to. Try and get along for once...sheesh.

I'll let the great writer Homer end this one:

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
