They say that how you spend January 1st sets the tone for how the rest of the year will follow suit. Well, I spent the whole day watching "The Nanny" marathon on Cozi TV. And, if the above statement is true I think I have an amazing year to come, all thanks to the amazing characters in the classic 90's sitcom.
"The Nanny" (for those who have never blessed their eyes and ears with this astounding television series) is about a down-on-her-luck cosmetic saleswoman from Queens, played by Fran Drescher, who becomes a nanny for the Sheffield family, a rich family of three children and a widowed father. Classic shenanigans and love stories ensue.
1. Fran Fine (The Nanny)
Be bold. Whether it was through her constantly bold clothing (honestly Fran's clothes deserve their own article), her high-pitched voice, or her ability to always make her opinion known Fran was always BOLD. There is no word but respect that comes to mind every time Fran comes on screen in either neon, shiny, or cheetah print clothes. She is a woman out to please no one but herself and makes that perfectly abundant in both clothing and dialogue.
2. Maxwell Sheffield (The Dad)
Be hardworking. Maxwell definitely wasn't as bold as Fran or as funny as Niles, but he was hardworking. How do I know this you ask? Well, take a look at his mansion of a house in Manhattan. That house was a truly awe-inspiring, stunning if you may. That house represents all the hard work, Mr. Sheffield, as a Broadway theatrical producer (don't overthink it people), achieves. He is a true motivation.
3. Niles (The Butler)
Be sarcastic. Always quick with a witty comment, Niles was the quintessential snarky relief throughout the series. His little comments and one-liners here and there showed that you don't have to be chipper all the time and always smiling. Niles showed that, sometimes, being sarcastic is the best thing that you can be.
4. C.C. Babcock
Be persistent. No matter what you think about C.C., no one could ever say she wasn't persistent. She yearned for Mr. Sheffield, yet through all his subtle rejections she still tried and made her feelings clear. She showed up at the house everyday (even if that was her job). That is commitment. That is persistence.
5. Yetta Rosenburg (Fran's Grandmother)
Be you, don't let your age define you. My favorite thing about Yetta was her silver, sequin workout jacket. Even being a supposedly "fragile" looking old lady Yetta still was a part of all the hustle and bustle in her dazzling workout gear. She showed that you shouldn't let your age or society define you, you should just simply be you. And look fabulous while doing it.
At the end of the day what makes this sitcom wondrous and still relevant is the eclectic characters and everything we can learn from them. So, the next time you're sitting there thinking "I'm so bored", turn on an episode of "The Nanny" and soak up all the lessons you can from the insanely inspirational characters.
