My family and I have 3 dogs: two pugs and a very nosy basset hound. They are the perfect cuddle buddies, running companions and goofballs, and never fail to make me or my family laugh. Sometimes they drive us insane or frustrate us, but overall, they are a gift. Dogs are much more than pets, though. They teach us things about life that only they can, and so here's a list of a few of those lessons:
1. Fetch what's yours.
You think fetch is only a game that dogs play? Wrong! Fetch shows us that it is important to go after what we want in life. You want to get fit? Go after it. Do you want to become a professional athlete? Chase that dream. Life doesn't just hand you things on a silver platter; you have to work hard to get what you want. So, in the wise words of dog owners everywhere, go fetch!
2. Some of the best things in life are simple.
While a perfect life with perfect relationships, a three story house and white picket fence are ideal, life is not that simple. Sometimes life is extremely complex. Take a dog's perspective: all they want is a belly rub and a good bone to chew on. From this, we can learn that some of the best things in life are not always the most complicated or flashy, but simple and candid.
3. Take a break.
Knowing my pups, sleep is a vital part of a dog's daily routine. Often times, that's all they do all day. Dogs know how to take a break and relax. This is such an important lesson to learn from. Us humans like to constantly be busy, jumping from one activity to the next. We should take a hint from dogs, and relax once awhile.
4. Let others know when something's wrong.
Although it can be annoying when a dog whines, they are telling us that something is wrong. You may be asking yourself what we can glean from this, and I don't blame you. This is an obscure connection, but a salient one nevertheless. I know I personally find it hard sometimes to tell others when I'm hurting, or going through a hard time. Dogs don't hesitate telling their owners when they are not happy, and we should not be afraid to tell your friends and family the same. Maybe not whining, but we should be open and willing to accept the help of others. Our lives will be better for it, I promise.
5. Don't be stingy with love.
My favorite thing about dogs is that they are always up for giving humans love, no matter who they are. The amount of times I've pet a dog walking with its owner is numerous, and always leaves me with another ounce of happiness. In a world consumed by hate, it is imperative that we love others unconditionally. See a stranger looking a bit down? Compliment them. Make love your mission, and don't be afraid to use it. We cannot afford to be stingy with our love.
So, as we can see, dogs are so much more than pets and playmates. They are comforters and teachers.
