What Does Valentine's Day Mean To You?

It's that time of year again ya'll; the season of love is upon us. When you all hear the term Valentine's Day, what do you think of? Most of you I'm sure would say hearts, flowers, chocolate, and love of course, that being with your significant other. Well, I do think of these things, but I also think of love in more ways than one. Love is more than just a feeling between people in a romantic relationship. And no, this isn't going to be some rant from a single girl about being totally fine with not having a "valentine."

First, let's talk about what exactly a Valentine is. Urban Dictionary defines it as, "A person you want to spend every day with." and "A person who is absolutely wonderful and makes your life better by just being a part of it. Someone you care about and know you can count on. Someone who likes you no matter how silly or weird you are." I think this is the greatest description ever. Your Valentine should definitely be someone you love and care about that loves you as well. Although, obviously, if the person you're in a relationship with was not any of these things to you, I guess you wouldn't have them as your valentine.

Valentine's Day really isn't a day just for couples, in my opinion. Obviously it's a great day for couples to spend together and shower each other with love and what not, but it's also a day to show all of the people in your life how much you love them. I loved how in elementary school we all gave everyone in our class a Valentine's Day card because it's a day to share with all of our friends and those around us, but as we got older it became more focused on couples. I think of Valentine's Day of a day to tell my family, my closest friends, and of course my one true Valentine (my dog), how much I love them. I might do so with a text, call, social media post, card, or gift. It doesn't really matter. All that matters is that you show others some love. It could be your best friend, sorority sister, mom, dad, sibling, aunt, cousin, neighbor, or really anyone in your life at all.

This Valentine's Day I will be showing my friends, family, and even acquaintances some love, in any way big or small, because what is there to life without love? Mainly, what is there to life without the people you love? Just like the definition I quoted from Urban Dictionary said that your valentine is just someone you love having in your life, and who loves you no matter what. So, I certainly consider myself blessed because this being the case, I am going to have so many Valentines this year. I have so many people who I love so dearly and that is really all this day is really about. So couples, singles, or whoever, I hope you all have a great Valentine's Day, and I hope you show the people in your life some love.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
