I think most Americans were surprised to see Trump elected as the nation's 45th president. I personally thought Trump's speeches and outbursts were riddled with insensitive remarks that crossed into territories such as xenophobia, racism, sexism and ignorance. I understand Clinton had her faults to, and this commentary is not a debate about which candidate is the lesser of two evils, or why Trump should have lost, but what a Trump Presidency would look like.
What my liberal and democratic friends need to understand is that 60,350,241 million people voted for Trump, and what he stood for. Yes, I also understand Hillary won the popular vote by a sizable margin, but the reason the electoral college was set in place is that half of the population lives in 146 out of over 3000 counties. The purpose of an election is to have a fair way for everyone's voices to be heard, and right now having the electoral college is the best way that allows for the diverse interests for Americans to be represented.
Some of Trump's focal points during his campaign were illegal immigrants, Syrian refugees, Same-sex Marriage, and Women's rights. His plan on illegal immigration is a 10 point plan. Besides building a wall, and claiming that Mexico would pay for it his plan did not really differ from the conservative plan other Republicans presented. The other day in an interview with 60 minutes Trump stressed the fact that deporting the one to three million convicted criminals that are undocumented is the first priority. Trump has support from Paul Ryan on this specific issue and in turn will have majority support from congress that is primarily republican both in the House and the Senate. Trump's plans for an alleged full scale border patrol seems more far fetched, but his plans on getting rid of the catch and release policy seems like a probability. The assumptions that Trump will follow more of a conservative republican model than his campaign promises on issues with immigration is not just a hope I have, but Trump's only chance of not alienating everyone else in Washington. Trump's rhetoric of Immigrants and in this case of latino descent was awful. He made the statement early in his campaign about how Mexico was not sending their best, but rapists and drug dealers. As I disagree with this sentiment 100% to many of Americans that are maybe unemployed, disgruntled at the government, or just plain racist see this as just a blimp on a message they support. Make America Great Again.
That slogan has inspired spin offs such as Make America White Again because Donald Trump promised to bring back the good old times where things were better. I say this sarcastically because Trump used two very powerful emotions to win this election, and those were fear and hate. Watching the RNC many people would agree that Trump painted a very bleak picture of the world. That terrorism keeps getting worse, homicides in the streets, and unemployment being as bad as the great depression. Those numbers on homicides, and unemployment were not true because unemployment rate according to department of labour and statistics that rate has almost halved since the 2008 and 2009 recession. As well as the homicide rate from 2014 being at a 51 year low. The point that is being stressed is here President Trump will not be the same as Trump the candidate. In addition I strongly believe not only will Trump reel back this type of speech they will not be represented in his policies.
There are certain things such as same sex marriage where Trump on September 16th said that should be decided among states, yet a few days ago said "It's irrelevant because it was already settled. It's law." This adds to why I feel that Trump will ease off the gas pedal on issues he seemed so passionate about during the campaign season. Another instance was "I am so saddened to hear that," Trump told CBS' Lesley Stahl on "60 Minutes" when she said Latinos and Muslims are facing harassment. "And I say, 'Stop it.' If it -- if it helps, I will say this, and I will say right to the cameras: 'Stop it.'" Trump here again seems to be pulling away attack dogs in attempt to unify and not divide the country. Trump however still plans to appoint supreme court justices that would potentially overturn Roe vs. Wade, but not look at same-sex marriage.
This commentary's purpose was to address the possible outcomes of what a Trump presidency would look like. As of right now I don't imagine it being another sequel to The Purge like many Americans have made it out to be. I did not want Trump to become president he had insulted so many demographics of people, and inspired some truly hateful speech across our borders. With his campaign alone however it has shined a light on the systemic racism that our country still faces, and with his victory it brings up the single fact that Americans did not want to follow in Clinton's direction of prolonging an Obama legacy, but tear that down and start fresh with millionaire reality star. Trump seems to have been reading his Machiavelli because his campaign highlights the sentiment the end justifies the means. Trump said and did whatever he wanted or had to, so that he would be elected. Now Trump holds the most powerful office in all of the world, and I can't promise that Trump's discriminatory remarks won't come back. Trump grew up with money, and now that he has real power that is why I think he will work to please both republicans and democrats to get things done for his own legacy not the American people.
