At first glance, 'do good' is such an arbitrary term.
When I went through recruitment on the designated sisterhood day, I decided to test the girls in the houses. Recruitment was almost done, and I needed to make a decision. Fast. I wavered between a few houses, loving their philanthropy and recognizably tight-knit sisterhoods. So I asked a few of the girls, "What does your motto mean to you?" The responses varied: "Well, I'm not sure. It means a lot of things to a lot of different people." Sorry girl, cut. After that, however, my answers were all noticeably wonderful. One girl stood out in particular, the girl from the Delta Gamma house.
I sat down across from her, and we began talking. It was just a normal conversation until I asked her, "What does 'Do Good' mean to you?" She sat back in her chair with her brows furrowed, almost as if she were studying me. It would have been comical had I not been so horribly nervous. To this day, I'm not sure if she was surprised I asked, but she answered my question simply, "To put others before yourself." As someone who was expecting a long, drawn out, semi-autobiographical personal anecdote, I was shocked by her succinct response.
From there, she had me.
From there began an incredible, lovely, rewarding journey.
Every day, my sisters (my former dance coach, my mother and all of the incredible women of Gamma Xi) show me different ways to 'do good'. When tragedy struck our Delta Gamma family, we all contributed what we could to help our sisters in need.
To the Delta Gammas all across the globe, may we all uphold the wonderful standard set for us. Continue to strive to 'Do Good.'
To everyone else, doing good is an all-inclusive term. We can all Do Good.
