"What Do You Think Love Is?" -A Question Answered By Different Age Groups, Different People
Jacqueline Madrid

The question here is "What do you think love is?"

Love, to me, is ill-defined at the tongue of a human being. You'll have those that scream it's in action then there's those that need the words and the voice of compassion to caress their ears. I think to be definitive and certain which there is for everything. There should be a one and only true example to follow. One definitive showing of love. To be able to love, first and foremost, is such a gift. To know how, is another because it means we turned to give our attention or sought after the true meaning. Love is from the Creator that has it all planned out.The Mind that not only birthed me and my every characteristic but set out a specific path for me before the womb. To give me meaning. To give me and everyone a chance. Then our love is shown in a smile from a stranger walking-by, a "I wish you the best. I am here for encouragement and support", and there's also the feelings that come when the chemical reaction takes place in your brain that assures you and assures you again that you really do like the person in front of you at dinner on the fifth date not just because their eyes glisten but their soul does too. Although, I really want you to remember that LOVE is a choice. You can choose to love in every moment, in every way. God-defined love makes the devil tremble in disgust, but it takes you over in waves and fills you. Love has no thought of the person you're directing it towards, it's just initiated within that second there's an encounter. It doesn't matter who. Love like Jesus. He didn't pick and choose who, he just did. He just loved. I am almost 22 years old and that is what I think love is.

I asked more people on a survey on my personal website, and the following will be their answers along with specific phone interviews with some children. This is more of a test to see differences about their definition of love amongst different ages. However, here we have female and male perspective, single, in a relationship, and married perspective, and of course the age perspective. I hope you enjoy reading these and that they cause you to self-reflect.

"Love is knowing you're leaving yourself vulnerable in hopes that it will all be worth it even though the odds say it won't be. Love is sacrificing for somebody without expecting them to do the same in return. Love is finding somebody who makes you feel safe and comfortable, somebody who you can sit in silence with and still feel comfortable. Love is desperate, love is a little ridiculous. Love is scary. Love is unfortunate. Love is exhilarating. Love is risky and dangerous. Love is throwing all caution to the wind. Love is sure. Love is something that can't be said it has to be felt. Love is the energy you feel the millisecond before you kiss. It's the intangible but definitely tangible static when you touch. Love makes no sense and makes perfect sense at the same time. Love can ruin lives and can resurrect lives. Love is bold. Love is patient. Love is honest and love is unconditional." --Age 20

"Love is an unconditional feeling that you feel towards a person or object. A feeling in which you desire the best for this person, & happiness but also knowing that wanting the best for this person may not always be the easiest route. Love is patient & kind, seeing everyone as equal and not by their flaws.

P.S Love is giving the last fry to me" --Age 16

"Love is an emotion that you feel towards a person. But there's many types of love. Like for example the kind that you feel for your children isn't the same love you can potentially feel for a husband, then there's the type of love that you feel towards God." --Age 49

"I have a grasp of what love is or what it should be but I don't really know what it is since to me love has no end. Depending in what context you're speaking, love grows and grows. Loving your significant other and loving a slice of pizza are two different things. One is affection and the other is pleasure. But when you love someone, it's when you're able to look past their flaws and appreciate who they are. Whether it's your girlfriend, parents or a best friend, you're compassionate towards them in different manners but you still care. It's who you would drop anything to go help them if they're in trouble." --Age 21

"Love can be different for many different people. Between friends it is love and friendship, being there for each other, when there is a need, or just getting together to do things you enjoy together. Between a man and woman it would be considered being in love, it is a spiritual and physical giving and taking between each other. Passion and discovery while getting to know and grow together forming a mutual and loving bond." --Age 55

"I think love is sacrificial. It is putting another person before yourself consistently and selflessly. I think love means setting aside things you want or things you feel like you need in order to meet the other person's needs. Love is all the things in 1 Corinthians 13. Patient. Kind. Not jealous. Not proud. It always protects, perseveres. And it never fails." --Age 23

"'and I can't let it bother me if fact and fate just can't agree on love, on life can't we stop taking ourselves too seriously?' - Bayside, On Love On Life It's hard home-hitting lyrics like that that make love and loving such a compelling concept. I've had a deep connection with music for the past decade of my life, both as a listener and as a musician. To keep this short and simple, my love for music and song writing is reflective of how I engage with love as an idea. So much of music is about creating an idea and putting forth the effort to develop it to the best of your ability, no matter what the ups and downs to get there will do for you." --Age 21

"When you feel at home with yourself or with another person." --Age 29

"I think love is waking up and wanting to see, hear, talk, feel or be in any type of communication with your significant other before anybody else in the world. Nobody else is in the way of you and him/her." --Age 21

Thank you so much to everyone that participated. It was so hard to choose for this feature opportunity. I will be holding surveys like this often. Let your voice be heard at anytime, okay? Everyone's answers touched my heart. Thank you again.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
