It’s that time in the semester where we either have our routine down, or we are still scrambling around trying to figure out what is going on. I never really noticed how much of a routine my life really was until the day I was asked what it is I live for. It was a typical Tuesday afternoon waiting for my next class to start when I decided to visit the student store on campus. Minding my own business and getting what I needed, I headed to the cashier's stand. I was greeted by a gentleman who then started to ring up my items when he stopped and asked me, “What do you live for?” I was immediately caught off guard that I didn’t even know what to say. Laughing it off, I grabbed my items and was on my way.
“What do you live for?” This question was left with me all day, I couldn’t stop thinking about it. I guess I have never taken the time to realize what it is I am living for. School, jobs, clubs, and other factors have kept me so busy that this was the last thing on my mind. My routine had just become something I do every day that I hadn’t noticed how important this question really is.
College is a time to take advantage of every opportunity and to get a degree. We go in with a mindset of what we want to accomplish and how we are going to get there. So, when school starts up we get right into it. School, friends, work, and other obligations we have. This is when the routine starts.
We need to take the time to look at our lives and examine it clearly. What do you live for? Do you live to get a degree and get that dream job? Do you live for your friends and family? What is it you want to live for? There are so many things to live and be thankful for. If the cashier at the student store never asked me the simple question I have always ignored, I would be stuck in my same routine. Now, I still do what I need to get done, but now I take the time to do these things and remember what it is I’m living for.
Whether its religion, family, school, etc. take the time out of your day to answer this question. Use this question in your everyday life when you are down in the dumps or at a high point in your life. This question is a simple way for a realization in life. It will help you get what you need to get done and help you make good choices that could benefit your future. So, what do you live for?
