One’s identity is not found in what they do. When we introduce ourselves we often say “Hello, my name is _____. I am _____”. We tend to give our identity to our work or what we are best known for. Hypothetically, what if that identity was taken away? If one lost their job or was prevented from what they love doing for whatever reason, I believe more often then not that person would feel lost. Who are we when we are not defined by responsibility or expectation? Growing up in today’s culture and transitioning in to the professional work space, I have found that the expected mindset is to be driven and fully devoted to being the best in one’s field of work or study for one’s own gain. Sometimes I wonder where the motivation comes from, what the reason is for one’s ambition.
What happens is we were to not be defined but our education level, job title, or status? In High School I was involved in sports, I had been an athlete most of my life. When I couldn’t run cross country anymore I felt like I was myself. I was not sure of who if I was not an athlete, I was struggling to know who I really was. I believe that who we are depends on our set of mind. I am a Christian, yes I believe in God. I have come to learn that who I am can not be found in what I can do, or what job I pursue. I have taken a new approach to defining who I am, and it has made all the difference.
Hello, my name is Scarlett and I am a child of God. I am in my last year of undergrad and I am studying athletic training. I enjoy painting and the occasional leisure run.
Nothing you do wrong, or your inabilities, can take away from who you are. Nothing you do well can give a greater value to who you are.
