What Cheerleading Has Taught Me

It may just be cheerleading, but it's so much more than that

What Cheerleading Has Taught Me

I have invested 16+ years of my life to cheerleading and I would not have it any other way. Cheerleading is the biggest part of me and I have learned so many things because of it. Cheerleading has taught me so many life lessons that I can apply to myself and use forever. I hope other cheerleaders have realized some of the same things I did and can carry them close for the rest of their lives. Even though it is just cheerleading, there are many things that we can take with us to be upstanding human beings.

1. You need to work hard in order to achieve a goal. Not everything in life comes easy!

In this generation, we are given whatever we want with a blink of an eye. No one understands that it takes hard work and determination to achieve your goals. You cannot be good at something by only putting in half of your effort. You need to work hard, commit, and be mentally and physically tough in order to be good at something. Not everyone gets a trophy.

2. Not everyone is a team player.

There's no "I" in team. With 16+ years of cheerleading under my belt, I have met many people who put themselves over the team, coaches and athletes alike. Not everyone is a team player, but you don't have to be like them. Let even those unfortunate decisions from others teach you be a postitive athlete.

3. You need to be dedicated.

Being on a team of any sorts takes dedication and time commitment. If you cannot dedicate and commit to something, than you will never be successful.

4. You can always get better.

You are never at your peak. There is always room for improvement. There is always room for growth. Do not let yourself get stuck or settle. You can always be better.

5. Your teammates are your family.

Traveling, competing and working together. The people on your team are your family. You cry together. You win together. You lose together. No one understands the things you are going through better than the people you are doing it with. Your teammates are your family, don't take them for granted.

6. You can do anything you set your mind to. Don't let anyone stop you.

"No one has the power to shatter your dreams unless you give it to them." -Maeve Greyson.

Do not give someone the power to dull your sparkle. If you set your mind to it, you can do anything. Don't let the haters keep you down.

I think the hardest thing about going away to college is figuring out how to become an adult. Leaving a household where your parents took care of literally everything (thanks, Mom!) and suddenly becoming your own boss is overwhelming. I feel like I'm doing a pretty good job of being a grown-up, but once in awhile I do something that really makes me feel like I'm #adulting. Twenty-somethings know what I'm talking about.

I went to a small high school, like 120-people-in-my-graduating-class small. It definitely had some good and some bad, and if you also went to a small high school, I’m sure you’ll relate to the things that I went through.

1. If something happens, everyone knows about it

Who hooked up with whom at the party? Yeah, heard about that an hour after it happened. You failed a test? Sorry, saw on Twitter last period. Facebook fight or, God forbid, real fight? It was on half the class’ Snapchat story half an hour ago. No matter what you do, someone will know about it.

Chandler Bing

I'm assuming that we've all heard of the hit 90's TV series, Friends, right? Who hasn't? Admittedly, I had pretty low expectations when I first started binge watching the show on Netflix, but I quickly became addicted.

Without a doubt, Chandler Bing is the most relatable character, and there isn't an episode where I don't find myself thinking, Yup, Iam definitely the Chandler of my friend group.

Working with the public can be a job, in and of itself. Some people are just plain rude for no reason. But regardless of how your day is going, always having to be in the best of moods, or at least act like it... right?

1. When a customer wants to return a product, hands you the receipt, where is printed "ALL SALES ARE FINAL" in all caps.

2. Just because you might be having a bad day, and you're in a crappy mood, doesn't make it okay for you to yell at me or be rude to me. I'm a person with feelings, just like you.

3. People refusing to be put on hold when a customer is standing right in front of you. Oh, how I wish I could just hang up on you!

RBF, or resting b*tch face, is a serious condition that many people suffer from worldwide. Suffers are often bombarded with daily questions such as "Are you OK?" and "Why are you so mad?" If you have RBF, you've probably had numerous people tell you to "just smile!"
