What the Characters of Blue Mountain State Can Teach Us About College

You don't have to be the best at everything

Back-up quarterback Alex Moran knows this and has shared his ways with the world. Alex's goal is to have as much fun in college as humanly possible and that doesn't include pushing toward starting quarterback. He is perfectly content with his second string position and knows that as long as he is having a good time, he doesn't need to put himself under tons of stress to become first string. Alex's super chill attitude reminds us to not put ourselves under so much pressure and focus on just enjoying college while it lasts. Maybe you're not the best student in your intro to environmental studies class. Who effing cares. As long as the material is interesting to you and you enjoy learning it (and are at least passing, of course), then don't worry so much and just relax.

Find something you are passionate about

Quite the opposite from Alex, starting linebacker Thad Castle centers his life around the Blue Mountain State football team and their good name. He still parties just as hard, if not harder, but he also has goals and is determined to reach them. Thad is the captain of the team and takes his leadership role very seriously. If you forget about the severe bullying, excessive alcohol/drug use, and demonic hazing he puts his fellow teammates through, Thad really does have all their best interests at heart. He is the football player and puts all of his energy into defending their national championship title. It is important in college to find something you care that much about.

Don't conform to your school's norms

Sammy Cacciatore, AKA Billy the Mountain Goat, is the best mascot Blue Mountain State has ever had (some may argue this). He also reminds us to just be ourselves and not give a damn about what other people think. Sammy knows he isn't as good looking as his football buddies and he isn't the most athletically capable guy either, but he still goes out there and does his thing. He goes up to girls like any guy and does it with confidence, even if he gets shut down almost every time. If everyone was as courageous as Sammy, school would be a much more awesome place filled with awesome people just being themselves and putting it all out there.

Do things outside your comfort zone

This lesson can be taught to us by pretty much every character on the show, but most of all by straight-laced running back Craig Shilo. Craig came into college freshman year with his long time girlfriend as a whipped, obedient, sucker for love. He lived in fear of doing anything to upset her (this included drinking, partying, staying out late, talking to anyone of the female gender, or anything else fun). Basically he found out she just wanted him for his future NFL paycheck and cheated on the reg so he got rid of her and finally got to experience the joys of college. It was super liberating for Craig to break out of his uptight ways and experience crazy things he never would have before. So take up a super random club sport or sign up for a super artsy art class, because any one of us can break through our comfort zone.

Have no regrets

Drunkest cheerleader at the party, Mary-Jo Cacciatore shows us that life, especially college life, is all about living with no regrets. Own your decisions, even your mistakes, and don't let anyone shame you. If people want to judge you for the decisions you make- let them. Haters gonna hate, but you're only in college for four short years so make the most of it while you can. If Mary Jo wants to show up to cheer practice drunk, who's to tell her that's wrong? Be proud of everything you do in college because it is a sad waste of time to dwell and harp on things you maybe wish you hadn't done. Remember- it's called a stride of pride, not a walk of shame.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
