What We Can Learn From Children

This past summer I had the privilege of going on a mission trip out of the country. This trip was not only one of the greatest eye-opening experiences, but it also taught me so much about how much children can actually impact someone’s life. The trip was about going and proclaiming the Gospel to children who do not have the religious opportunities that we as Americans have. We went and did our best to teach on what was planned in a way that these kids could understand. I was prepared to encounter various bugs and new foods, but I was not prepared to find out how these small kids would teach me what I believe are some of the greatest things we could have as humans.

They taught me encouragement.

The days were early and they were so long. Constantly being on your feet takes so much energy out of you, but arriving to see the kids smiling and waving and wanting to see us so badly made everything seem so little. Every morning we would drive to the schools and instantly be greeted by every single little one and it made everything so worth it.

They taught me patience.

In a place with a different culture and different ways of living, patience with your neighbors is difficult. You are with your team 24/7, and sometimes your buttons get pushed. The kids were so patient, and it made me want to be more patient as well.

They taught me gratitude.

Seeing where these kids came from and how they lived showed me that I had so much to be grateful for, even for just the little things. They constantly thanked us for being there and it was so clear that they meant every single bit of it.

And lastly, they taught me love.

Coming into these villages as an outsider, you think that the people are going to treat you differently than they would their own people. That was not the case at all. I have never experienced so much love from another human than I did with these children. They would hug us, and treat us as members of their families; that feeling was one of the most comforting I have encountered.

Kids are not only little and full of spunk, they also carry so much of the greatest qualities on the face of this earth. They are truly the things that make this world go round. Without children, this world would be a very terrifying place and having kids here makes it such a rewarding place. Our lives truly would not be the same without them.

In case you're unaware, "resting bitch face" is the term used to describe when a person's natural, expressionless face makes it look like they are mad at the world. Whether they are walking down the street or simply spacing out thinking about what to eat for dinner, it's very easy for others to assume that this person is either upset or mad at them. Because of this, those of us with Resting Bitch Face (RBF), and especially us women, have all experienced many of the same situations and conversations, including:

We've all had a crush before. Whether it leads to something or nothing, the process has all been the same. The awkward feelings, the stalking, and the stress of trying to keep this huge secret. The feeling of becoming a total spazz is something that cannot be avoided, and the most spazzy family that can relate to this feeling is the Belcher's.

At the tender age of 18, we are bestowed with the title of “adult.” For 17 years, we live under the rules and guidelines of our parents, school, and government, and to stray from any of those rules or guidelines marks us as a rebel. At 18, though, we must choose which college we want to go to or what career we want. We are allowed and encouraged to vote. We can buy lottery tickets and cigarettes. We can drop out of school, leave our household, and do other "adult" things. At 18, we start down a path of thinking for ourselves, when for the entirety of our lives other institutions have been mandated to think and do for us.

What about those of us who don't do it all in four years?

"College will be the best four years of your life" is a phrase that we have all heard growing up. College is painted as a magical place to us while we are in high school. A place you go to learn, meet your best friends and probably have the time of your life while all of this is going down. Four whirlwind years, where everything that you've known changes and you start to learn what it means to live on your own, have a job, etc. But what about those of us who don't do this all in four years? Major changes, hard courses, switching schools, career paths changing, these are just a handful of factors that could extend your four years to five, six or seven. There is nothing wrong with taking extra time to graduate, but returning as a fifth-year is a little different. Most of your best friends have most likely graduated and moved and while you may be one of the oldest undergraduates on campus, you might feel as awkward as a freshmen. A world that became home and comfortable to you is still there but it's slightly different than you've known it to be and you have to find a groove to fall into. These are thoughts you'll have as you look ahead to returning to your college campus, with a victory lap planned.
