This year, I decided to be a Rho Gamma. For those of you who do not know what that means, it is:
1. Disaffiliating yourself from your sorority
2. Being a guide for incoming women looking to be potential new members
3. Being a mentor
4. Being a source for information
5. Providing an unbiased outlook on Greek Life
Now, I had always been on the other side of recruitment. I would be with my sisters for several hours a day practicing and preparing for new women to come through our chapter to get a glimpse of what being in our sorority really meant—showcasing our values and our sisterhood.
Preparing for recruitment is an amazing experience and you get to bond with your sisters even more during the process of recruitment. But this time around, instead of promoting my own sorority, I wanted to promote why being in Greek Life in general was an amazing opportunity. I found friendship, excitement, creativity, independence, and support in my own sorority and want to help other women find the same with whatever sorority it may be.
Being a Rho Gamma, you are put together with a bunch of other women from different sororities and must not only learn the rules of recruitment, but also information about each others sorority so that if a potential new member were to ask a specific question, you would have the answer to it. Being a Rho Gamma, you learn to work with others outside of your sorority and help each other to learn about your own chapter and also better the Greek system all together. Although there is a lot of time you must sacrifice out of your day to learn so much information, it is all worth it.
I have come out of this with new friends and reasons why the women I am surrounded by, joined Greek Life. Being a Rho Gamma has taught me that Greek Life is more than just your own sorority and your letters that you represent—it is a community of empowered leaders who support and lift each other up to be the best that they can be.
