I'll be honest, I had no intention of becoming Editor in Chief for my schools Odyssey Community. I didn't think that I would have the time to fully dedicate myself to this community, but boy was I wrong. After being convinced by a friend on the team to take the position of Editor in Chief for the Becker College Community I can proudly say that this was the best decision I could have made. I have learned so much from this experience and where is why I love what I do so much.
It's a confidence builder.
When you're constantly submitting every week and editing your team's articles, you always learning and improving your skills which in time makes you a better writer. I love seeing the teams and my own skills get better throughout every week.
It teaches responsibility.
Not only am I responsible for submitting articles every, I am also responsible for keeping up with everyone on the team, making sure everyone is submitting, finding new recruits (Apply here), editing my team's articles, and making sure out AME is caught up with everything on the team. Before taking over this position, I wouldn't consider myself a responsible person, but this experience has taught me so much about taking on responsibility and keeping up with it.
It builds community.
I love meeting new people and here at Becker, we are all about building a community. When you join odyssey, you meet people who go to your school that you have never met and people who share the same interests as you. You can never have too many friends on campus!
It made me a better leader.
I have always been a follower. I used to rather be told exactly what to do rather than figure it out on my own and lead others. Now being an EIC for about five months now, my leadership skills have grown and I can now consider myself a leader alongside my Contributing Editor
I am not a perfect EIC, I sometimes miss a week because life gets complicated. I sometimes slack on my responsibilities but I always seem to find a way to bounce back better and stronger. Being able to write for a national platform while still in college is a huge achievement for me. I am extremely proud to be the EIC for this community and I wouldn't trade this experience for anything in the world.
