"What rights do women not already have?" "What exactly are they marching for?"
We march for the women who have been raped and are immediately asked "well what were you wearing?" and the women who aren't taken seriously after they so bravely open up about their rape. Example: Brock Turner raped a girl behind a dumpster and served only three months in jail, because his father and the judge were afraid of how this event would affect HIS life. We march about this, because our current President believes that it is his right to touch or grab women at any given time.
We march for the women who fear losing their rights to their own bodies, to their choices, to their birth control. Yes, right now we have those rights but it is obvious that under the Trump presidency these rights could be under attack. So these women are marching to show that these are rights that are important to them and that they will stand up to Trump to keep them.
We march for the equal pay of women. I keep hearing that women do get paid the same, because that's the law, but employers find ways to avoid this. We march because employers find ways to pay women less than men for the exact same job.
We march for the future of females, for the next generation. These girls need to know that bodies are not up for grabs, that their opinions are important, that THEY are just as able to change the world as men are.
Not only do we march for women, but we march for LGBTQ rights. No one should be judged or denied a job or service based on who they love or what gender they identify as.
We march for Muslims to be accepted without fear of being kicked out of this country that is just as much theirs as it is ours. We are standing up against the Muslim registry that our president has spoken about to further divide our nation.
So sure maybe women have the rights that men have, but they are not treated like equals. Maybe women can vote, but their opinions are not as important as the opinions of men. Maybe right now women have access to Planned Parenthood, but this administration is already working to take that away. Maybe gays can be married now, but this administration is working to take that right away, and our Vice-President believes that we can shock gays until they are no longer attracted to the same sex. Maybe Muslims are allowed in America right now, but our president's plans to remove them and his rhetoric toward Muslim Americans is damaging and dividing us even further. We march for everyone that Trump does not respect: women, people of color, Muslims, gays, trans people, disabled people. Yes, these injustices were there in America before January 20th, sure, but at least we had a president that fought for us. We had a president that didn't add to the harmful rhetoric. We had a president that we counted on, but now our rights are under fire and our nation's leader is also the face of male chauvinists, homophobes, racists, xenophobes, and bigots.
But, President Donald Trump, we will not back down. We will not allow our rights to be taken. We will stand up to you and your rhetoric. We will fight for what is right.
