Holiday treats are more than the peanut butter blossoms mom makes when you are coming home from a long semester at school. They are special traditions that everyone does in their family together to remind them that the holidays shouldn't be about the physical gifts we receive. During this Christmas season, families should we together, laughing, caroling, and just enjoying their company. Of course, with peanut butter blossoms.
Personally, I am not very far from home, but school has kept me away for so long. Now, I can finally be somewhere where I know I am safe, I am welcome, and I don't have to question anything anymore. Gone is the drama that made my year a living hell. Melted away are the long evenings of wondering if college has been worth all this effort. Gone are the negativities that I have seemed to dwell on for a significant amount of time.
Walking through the front door, to be greeted by your dog and hugs and kisses from family members makes the holidays to worth while. This may be an unpopular opinion, but even though Christmas is a religious holiday, I feel that being with family the entire meaning of the Christmas season. It's hard knowing that your mom is baking sugar cookies and texting you saying she wishes you were here. You joke along with her as you're taking a break from your final research essay to tell her that you will be home Saturday to have a glass of wine and to share those cookies while you listen to classic Christmas tunes and laugh about all the memories with each other and tease Dad about his unfair share of the cookies.
Remember, if you don't celebrate Christmas or celebrate in another way, there is always the common theme of family, togetherness, and of course good treats.
