What Ignorant Americans Need To Know About This Election

As everyone knows, this year is going to hold one of the most controversial elections that our country has ever had. With two very exaggerated and opposing personalities running for president, the future of America is very questionable. But what might be even worse than the candidates that are running are the Americans who are giving either one of these candidates their support.

For example, not too long ago, Twitter began the trend "#GuessImWithHer." This hashtag originates from the time where it had been announced that Clinton and Trump were the official Democratic and Republican nominees. Being that a majority of social justice advocates on Twitter and other social platforms were supporters of Bernie, many people began tweeting that they were now supporting Clinton, despite the fact that a majority of them weren't very aware of the policies that Clinton planned on implementing if she were to assume office.

Just because your candidate of choice wasn't chosen as the nominee, that does NOT mean that you should just automatically support the other candidate who represents your party. Most people are willing to acknowledge that both Clinton and Trump have their flaws. They are two obnoxious personalities who have done nothing but stir up conflict with each other all throughout campaigning. As it comes closer to November, it has become worrisome to me that Americans aren't really understanding the severity of this election.

Just know that Trump and Clinton are NOT your only two options. There are numerous third party candidates that you might possibly agree with more than the two main party candidates. For example, some third party candidates include Dr. Jill Stein from the Green Party, Darrel Castle from the Constitution Party of the U.S. and former Governor Gary Johnson from the Libertarian Party. The saddest part of this election is that most Americans are unwilling to even acknowledge the presence of these third party candidates, simply because they do not have supporters of the same volume and number as both Trump and Clinton.

There have been numerous times in history where third party candidates have helped decide the winner of an election. In theory, if third party candidates gain popularity, they can possibly gain presidency or steal votes from one of the two main candidates, hence giving the presidency to the other main party candidate. Trust me, I'm not saying that you should feel obligated to vote for a third party candidate, but you should be aware of who they are, what they stand for and whether or not you support them and their road to the presidency.

It seems as if Americans have adopted this "ignorance is bliss" mentality in regards to the current election. I am telling you right now, that is NOT the right mentality. Educate yourselves. This is the future of our country. This isn't something that you can be ignorant about. We are talking about who will be running our country for the next four years. The man or woman that will be in charge of approving decisions, implementing policies and simply coordinating and maintaining the well-being of our country.

So whether you want to "Make America Great Again," you're "With Her," or neither, what you should do is be aware of your options. Don't decide not to vote just because you don't agree with either of the main party candidates. Not voting is probably the worst thing you can do. So educate yourselves and get out to those voting polls in November, because you have the power to decide who runs our country.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

April Ludgate

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
