Graduation time is here, high school seniors are more excited than ever to get to move away from home and into a dorm. Whether you want to admit it or not, the dorm life was fun, but ONLY for a year. So as you almost-college-freshman start packing things and making lists, here is a list of what to bring and what not to bring for your freshman dorm year!
DO bring: A towel wrap.
You try carrying a shower caddy and room key while holding your towel up; two words: accidental nakedness. Also it's awkward seeing someone walking boys down the hall and you're dripping and trying to hold up your towel, so instead: fashion statement/towel wrap.
DON'T bring: 47 brand new monogrammed towels and washcloths.
Honestly it's a waste of space, which you don't have. Five towels is plenty because you'll use them a few times before washing them and laundry happens.
DO bring: A Brita water filtering jug.
Whatever you do, don't trust the sink water.
DON'T bring: 17 cute Nalgene water bottles.
Remember that thing I said about having space for things? Well, you don't.
DO bring: A small fan for your desk or nightstand.
Dorms can get SUPER warm and a fan is a nice addition that is worth the space it takes up.
DON'T bring: A gigantic fan that will send all of your study guides across the room.
Trust me, the small fans are just as useful and less destructive and space consuming.
DO bring: College t-shirts (sizes Large & XL).
You'll wear them.
DON'T bring: Anything with your high school on it.
You won't wear it.
DO bring: School supplies.
Pens, pencils, paper, laptop, highlighters. That's about it.
DON'T bring: ALL OF OFFICE MAX.
LIke I said, you don't have the space.
DO bring: A bible.
Bring it and USE it. Find a bible study and get connected with a church.
DON'T bring: All of the books you "swear you'll read."
Again, no space.
DO bring: Enough underwear to last a month.
Sometimes laundry doesn't happen and a re-worn t-shirt is fine, but there is NO WAY you should be wearing nasty underwear.
DON'T bring: Your entire closet.
Bring t-shirts, shorts, stuff to wear to football games, stuff to wear out, and church outfits. Emphasis on the t-shirts and shorts.
DO bring: A positive attitude and lots of love for your roomie.
I had a few friends in tough roommate situations and boy was it hard. It can be tough living in such a small space with someone else, but why make it more difficult? Just love on your roommate and learn to love their weird habits and if you're lucky you will end up with such a great friend (love you Ali).
DON'T bring: Sass for your new roommate to deal with.
Seriously, everyone be nice to their roommate. It's no fun spending freshman year hating who you live with. Make it work, talk it out and be GIVING. Love your roommate because they could end up walking you to the bathroom at 4 a.m. when you're afraid of the dark (again, love you Ali).
