During the holidays, all the fun toys come out for adults to buy for the little kids in their life. I still walk down the toy aisle and see the toys I loved to play with and some new ones on the shelves that I would totally put on my list. Here is my Christmas list from my 5-year-old heart for this year’s holiday season!

1. A pretend car with a motor

What little kid doesn’t want to have a car of their very own that they can drive down their street, looking so cool? I asked for one every year, and every year my parents said no. They got me a real car later (not a Mercedes), so it’s all good now.

2. A Barbie Dream House

I was a Barbie girl in a world without a dream house. Sure, I could build one with blocks, but could I build a balcony with working lights and a grand staircase and a garage?

3.The Holiday Barbie or really any Barbies

If I’m going to have a house, I have to have dolls to live in it. The Holiday Barbie is a limited edition and everyone knows my dolls would love to try on that long, velvet holiday dress and pretend they are best dressed at the holiday ball.

4. Barbie Clothes

My dolls are going to need a new wardrobe to store in their new house. I mean, what fun is having the dolls if you can’t dress them up in clothes that you secretly wish came in your size.

5. Play-Doh

Play-Doh is an underrated toy. The number of possibilities for creating and fun are endless. It’s also not super messy (if you keep it on the table). I work in a preschool and if I was still 5 I would be asking for Play-Doh every day.

6. Art supplies (especially with glitter)

Little girl art is better when it’s sparkly and let’s be honest, who doesn’t love a little glitter every once in a while.

7. A pretend guitar

I have always wanted to know how to play guitar and pretend I’m a talented singer giving sold out concerts. Unfortunately, I have little musical talent and even worse dance skills, but when I was 5, I was a superstar to my stuffed animals and Barbie dolls. I was just missing the guitar.

8. Glow in the dark Magna-Tiles

I discovered these awesome magnetic building blocks working at a preschool, and they are SO AWESOME! The fact that they make them glow in the dark too just makes them better!

9. Any Princess Dress up Dresses

You are only 5 once, so you might as well live it up! A princess dress or really any dress-up clothes let you make believe and look and feel beautiful in your own special way. You are never too young to feel beautiful.

10. Play Food

Who doesn’t want to play store or restaurant and offer the best wooden food in town? It’s a great learning tool and they last a long time. You won’t have to ask for it again until next year because let’s face it, you lost it all in your house somewhere.

Doesn’t this just make you want to be little again! Happy Holidays and Merry Christmas to all! May we remember the true meaning of Christmas, but still enjoy the child in all of us as we receive our gifts!

I'll never forget the day that someone told me these words: "Madison, I think you're a good friend to everyone but yourself." I stood there completely in awe of that statement. Before that day, I never really thought about being a friend to myself, and at the time, I didn't really know what it meant. Now, I realize that you can't fully be there for other people unless you're there for yourself, too. You can't show up for others until you're willing to show up for yourself.

Here are five things everyone should learn in order to be a better friend to themselves. These steps are hard, but they're so worth it.
