"No man is good enough to govern any woman without her consent." - Susan B. Anthony
I've heard many women say they are not going to vote this election. It is a difficult election, but we must remember the struggles women faced to gain the right to vote. We cannot allow our voices to be silent.
Over one hundred years ago, thousands of women marched and rioted on Washington and fought for the right to vote. In 1913, Alice Paul conducted The Suffrage Parade of 1913 that brought women together from all over the nation. All of these women were prepared to fight for their right. These women were brave. They did not know the suffering they would endurance to submit a ballot. After marching the women later created the Congressional Union for Woman Suffrage, later the National Woman’s Party.
In 1917, Lucy Burns was a dedicated member of the National American Women Suffrage Association. She was arrested time and time again for protesting. Unfortunately, she spent the majority of the time during the suffrage movement in jail. Burns did receive the same treatment as men in jail. She was placed in solitary confinement, brutality beaten, and force feed due to she refused to eat.
Burns was a close friend of Susan B. Anthony. They both collaborated together to earn out right. On August 18, 1920, we were given the right to vote. I am so thankful for all the hard-work and dedication those women had. As a woman, I cannot imagine not being able to exercise my right to vote or my opinion to others. Sometimes we forget about all the hardship we suffered, but we cannot forget the blood, sweat, and tears they gave for our fight for equality. Ladies, get out there and let your voice be heard.
