Since the beginning of the rivalry in 1913, Westerly and Stonington have competed annually during the Turkey Day Game. At this game, spectators from both neighboring towns stand on their designated sides of the football field to cheer on their team. The rowdy high school sections battle in chants throughout the entire game, cheering on their school's athletes.
Festivities begin nearly a week in advance. The high school students participate in spirit week, dressing up to match that day's theme. Events throughout the week encourage the rivalry such as the ice cream eating contest, the rally on the post office steps, and the competitive fundraising for the local shelters and food pantries. Each school also creates a shirt designed by a student to sell throughout the week.
The Wednesday before the game, the high schools host their pep rally. At Westerly, the emcees from the senior class follow Bulldog, the mascot, as he tries to win over the trophy throughout a video story line. Live performances from the band, dance line, color guard, and cheer entertain the audience as well. The seniors on the football team are interviewed in an additional video and to conclude the rally, the football captains present their inspirational speeches.
So, as each town prepares for the game, who will prevail? Will it be Westerly or Stonington?
