Ladies and gentlemen, it is my pleasure to announce that we have officially arrived. Yes, you can put away your spooky costumes, candy, hangovers, and whatever else you might have gotten from a fun Halloween because the time has come: it is the month of November.
To me, November is kind of like that really good friend you might see once every year or two: you don't generally miss it any other time of the year, but once it comes, it's your best friend.
This might be a strange thing to think, and I understand. Of all the times of the year, why November? Why not summer, Christmas, even Easter? Well, here's why.
November is the only month out of the year where nearly every major sport is in season. In fact, November 1st was a very rare "sports equinox" — a day in which all four of the major American sports leagues have at least one game, and in this year's case, so did the CFL, EPL, La Liga, Bundesliga, Serie A, NASCAR, golf, the New York Marathon...it was a busy day.
The month starts off with a big ol' American bang: the World Series. This year, the Fall Classic flew by rather quickly, as the Royals washed the floor with the Mets in five games — it ended on the first day of the month. But there's no need to fear because we're just getting started.
Every night for the rest of the month, you can turn on your TV and some sporting event will be on basketball, football, hockey, even downhill skiing. If it's not baseball, then you can probably find it on TV somewhere, and that's perfectly fine with me.
It's also the start of the new College Football Playoff season. On November 3rd, the first rankings of the season were released, and the committee came out with quite a few surprises. It is only the beginning and nothing is set in stone by any means, but it's definitely a kickoff to the scramble that is the newly-instituted playoffs.
It all culminates on that fateful Thursday at the end of the month: Thanksgiving. Nothing sounds more appetizing to a sports fan than sleeping in, watching football, and eating delicious food until you explode. As sad as it may sound, watching whatever mediocre Lions team is playing followed by Tony Romo is an American tradition — but to me, it's awesome, and it's my favorite holiday.
Even though I may come off as a grinch, I hope you will understand why I'm so wary to rush into Christmas. I'm just trying to enjoy my November because, after all, it is the most wonderful time of the year.
