Being the picky eater that I am, when I came to college at West Chester University two years ago, I basically lived off grilled cheeses. I lived by the notion that a grilled cheese a day would keep all problems away. With these being such a main staple in my diet, I've tried a good amount of grilled cheese sandwiches within the West Chester area and feel like it's only fair if I rank them for all the other grilled cheese lovers out there who may not know what they're missing.
Now, I always say that I've never met a grilled cheese I didn't like. But there certainly are some that simply aren't as impressive as others.
Here's what my taste buds think. From least to best.
5. Lawrence Dining Hall
OK, so first up, but last on my list is the dining hall grilled cheese. Although Lawrence tends to offer some variety in their grilled cheese recipes, like throwing in some buffalo sauce or the occasional grilled ham and cheese, the sandwiches are typically sitting out for awhile leaving them stale and hardened by the time they get to your plate. They also tend to be very greasy and they never have enough cheese. These I'd only settle for when Lawrence was having a really bad night and offered no other viable options.
4. Barnaby's
I do love Barnaby's. They just don't specialize in grilled cheeses, which I should have known considering they don't even have one on the menu. When I ordered one, I actually got it off the kid's menu, which is actually pretty common for me. So it was cheap, but it was also pretty small. (Next time I'm getting the wings.)
3. Lunchbox Food Truck
The Lunchbox is my go-to food truck on Church Street. It has tons of great options that I frequently order, from chicken teriyaki to chicken tenders, but sometimes out of pure cheapness, I get the $3.00 grilled cheese. It's nothing super special, but it reminds me of my mom's homemade grilled cheeses, and it's even better if you pay the two extra dollars to get the fries and drink with it.
2. Sykes Student Union
If you aren't too busy or impatient to wait for a grilled cheese from The Grill in Sykes, your life will forever be changed. Most days, this is where I'd go for lunch and I would sometimes have to wait twenty minutes for it, but it was always worth it. These sandwiches are always on a perfectly toasted bread and have just the right amount of perfectly melted cheese inside. They're also fairly priced, so I could get one with a bag of chips and an iced tea and only use one meal swipe!
*Drum roll please*
1. Landmark
OK, so, my very favorite grilled cheese sandwich in the West Chester area definitely has to go to Landmark. You may have to travel into town a little farther than any of the other places, but it is so worth it. This grilled cheese is coined the "Grown Up Grilled Cheese" and it is a blend of melted Gruyere, cheddar, and Monterrey jack cheeses, all served on rustic Italian bread. A grilled cheese lover's dream.
What are you still reading for? You could already by half way to Landmark!!
