8 Things We Already Miss About School

Obviously not the academics.

8 Things We Already Miss About School
Maeve Murray

I know everyone is just now making progress on recovering from the massive sleep debt acquired during finals and it's nice to not have to set an alarm because there’s probably not all that much to do in your hometown anyways. However, everyone has to admit, there is something they miss about school already. Yes, we have an entire summer of adventure, internships and whatever else people do during our off months, but here are 8 of the things we are already starting to miss about Mother So Dear.

  1. 24- Hour Subway: Why is this first on the list? Man could I have gone for a couple of late night subs the past few weeks. Nothing stays open past 10 PM in the ‘burbs so I had to kiss that dream goodbye.
  2. Your location: Literally anyone you could ever want to see was within an easy 15 minute max radius. That’s the life.
  3. Your meal plan: Yeah, I know The Pit isn’t a 5 star place, but let me tell you what was nice; not having to hand over the debit card just to get lunch. No one gives you a magic card to pay for stuff with in the real world and no restaurants in Houston take Deacon Dollars.
  4. Your friends: Of course, this one is easy. Those best friends that you had near you at all times during the entire year, all of a sudden are spread throughout the United States and beyond. You’re checking your calendar and maps to try to figure out if there is a road trip route that can manage to take you through all 7 different states where your friends live. I promise, it's hard to do.
  5. Your weekends: All the foolery and chaos that happens on a college campus every single weekend just cannot be topped by an evening in the suburbs.
  6. Having a schedule: Obviously not an academic schedule, but it was nice when you had a little structure to your day. Sometimes when you're home you can fall asleep at 3 p.m. and wake up at 8, eat dinner and then go get back in bed. Yeah we probably all need the sleep, but none of us got anything out of that kind of day.
  7. The freedom: You can kind of do whatever you want, whenever you want at college. That’s pretty rad. Don’t get me wrong, coming home is great, but realizing you still have to wake your parents up when you get home at night is a real change of events from your normal independence at college.
  8. Just about everything other than the studying and classes and things you didn’t want to do: I do miss being able to get XL slices of pizza whenever I want and not using my debit card to do it. Or being able to lay down on the quad for a few hours even though I know I’m going to get sunburned. Obviously it’s good to be home, but man, college is a pretty rad place.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
