If you've been watching the news lately, like I have, you've noticed a lot of strange things have happened lately. Donald Trump was elected president. Russia interfered with our election. And the country is more divided than ever. It's hard to make sense of it all. It makes one stop and asks oneself, "What country are we living in?" Especially if you're like me, who just woke up from a coma.
It's difficult to remember when this all started. It seemed like America was cruising along just fine. Like a cyclist riding on a freshly paved blacktop. Then, all of a sudden, the 2016 Election came. An election so brutal that it blindsided this country, like a someone opening a car door without first looking behind them. America crash into this metaphorical car door flipped over their handlebars and smash onto the pavement head first. Leaving us disoriented and bleeding from the skull.
When watching the news, one can't help but feel like we are trapped in a nightmare. Wait, maybe I am dreaming? I feel tired and woozy. I'm completely naked beside this hospital gown. Oh and I am late for my Econ exam!
But sadly, no, this is not a dream. What we are being told by our newscasters, journalists and doctors are true. The America we're living in is the reality.
We still have many questions to ask ourselves about our country. Do the values we used to believe in still hold true? Is this still the land of the free and the home of the brave? Is Old Glory still waving proudly with its 50 stars and 13 stripes? Or is it 51 stars and 12 stripes? I can't remember. Is Puerto Rico a state? What's our deal with them?
Whatever happens to this country over the next four years we must continue to strive for the best. Stand up and fight against bigotry, racism, and sexist. And things aren't all bad like at least I still have my government provided health insurance.
