Why We're All #BevStrong

We thank you, President Warren.

Why We're All #BevStrong

Recent news of Kent State University President Beverly Warren’s diagnosis of breast cancer shook and upset the entire university. When I came to campus in 2014, President Bev was just beginning her presidency, and I instantly fell in love with the spunky and uplifting woman she is. Although I never had the opportunity to know another Kent State University President, I still knew that Bev would be the best that this University has ever seen. She treats every student as if she knows them personally, and that is why the news of her sudden diagnosis hit each and every one of us so close to home, because she is family.

Attending a university as large as Kent State has the potential to really separate the students and even faculty. The decently large campus holds around 41,000 undergraduate and graduate students as well as 6,000 professors and faculty, but despite this, there was an instant feeling of family and an outpouring of support for our President during her time of need.

The reasoning behind this is how amazing of a woman she is. In a university-wide email, President Warren stated that she would be taking an immediate leave of absence to undergo surgery for her breast cancer. She stated that the cancer was fortunately found at very early stage during a routine checkup. With that being said, Warren then went on to discuss how important routine checkups and physicals are, in spite of occurrences like this. Not only did President Warren share and discuss quite personal information in this email, she still expressed her concern for the university’s health and safely, even in her time of need.

Shortly after this email was sent, a KentWired article released the information, and students took to social media outlooks, including Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook in support of President Warren. A hashtag #BevStrong was started that chained tweets wishing Bev kind words of encouragement as she prepared to undergo surgery. Additional hashtags such as #FlashesForever and #KentStrong followed shortly after, just proving how much of an impact the President has had on the university and its family-like aspects and values. In addition to social media, the rock on campus was painted by the gymnastics team to say #BevStrong.

Since the email with this news was released last Thursday, Bev has undergone surgery, and according to another article, emails and gifts are being accepted on campus for her.

Having a President that truly cares about the students is what makes Kent State feel like home. The close-knit community feeling despite its large size is brought on by its leaders. President Warren makes Kent State a university to be proud of and she is the reason for all of our incredible universities success and growth.

While she is away during her leave of absence, the school will not be the same. However, we know not to worry, because despite her seemingly small stature, Bev has one of the biggest hearts on campus. So here’s to you, President Warren: stay strong and get well soon. The university will be waiting with open arms upon your return.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
