We Are 20 And This Is Our Time
Janelle Batz

I got to say that I'm a little sick of hearing criticism from the older generations. Constantly pestering me on my outfit choices or what I do in my free time. I'm sure you all can relate to those annoying conversations. "Oh... you went to a festival?" or "I don't really like that outfit you're wearing." Let me say one thing, it's none of your concern.

That's right. I'm speaking up for all of the kids in my generation who are too afraid to say it. This is our time. We're in our early twenties. This is the time where we're supposed to experience life. We're supposed to go out and get a little too drunk. We're supposed to blow our money on concert tickets. We're supposed to wear whatever is in style right now. We're supposed to experiment with things and find out our likes and dislikes. These are the years we're supposed to find ourselves. But how can we find ourselves when all we get is downward looks?

The funny thing is, you all went through this stage of your lives too. You all went through your early twenties where you wore clothes that weren't "parent appropriate". You went out and danced on tables at night. You tried things that you probably shouldn't have. And you know what? It's thanks to that time of your life that you're the person you are today. You needed to cut loose and get a little crazy sometimes. It was all part of the journey.

Now, I would kindly like to ask you that the next time someone mentions that they just spent all weekend camping at a festival or is wearing a shirt that is a little too revealing; that you remember you were there once too. Cut us some slack. We're just young adults trying to find our place in this world and yeah sometimes that involves drinking a little too much tequila. (But let's be real, you can never drink too much tequila).

Dear Mom,

You took care of me and my brothers our entire lives and you still continue to! I will not be able to truly grasp all of the hard work that you put into this family until I create my own one day. But, I know that there are plenty of times I forgot to give you a simple thank you or an appreciative smile. I thank you for everything that you have done for me and will continue to do for me. Here are some examples of those times where you had my back and I forgot to pat your back for saving me:

College is hard. As people ages 18-22, we’re just trying to figure out what we’re doing with our lives, our careers, our eating habits, exercise routines, sleep patterns, and other necessities for adult life. We definitely don’t take proper care of ourselves; it’s basically impossible when we have essays, tests and readings due and somehow we’re supposed to eat right, exercise and sleep. We’re doomed to get sick. I have zero experience in science but when I get sick there are certain things I do to make myself better.

Now that it seems “talking” is the new way to date, and will stay that way until another idiotic term is used to describe the people who can’t settle down and just date someone, I feel as if it’s time to go over the unwritten rules of “talking.”

Rule 1. Having feeling without feeling.
