This past week, Wells Fargo, known as an American banking and financial services company released an advertisement for their September 17 Teen Financial Education Day. This advertisement implied that science based jobs such as engineering are far more successful than a job as an actor or dancer.
Once the Broadway and theatre community saw this advertisement, they were outraged. Let me say something, I am a performer myself, so this set me off too. Being a part of the theatre community is not as easy as people think it is. It requires just as much hard work as any other job would. Wells Fargo failed to see that their advertisement was somewhat offensive to people like me who pursue performing arts as their career. It saddens me to see how overlooked the arts can be. Us performers work just as hard as someone who does accounting or engineering. Period.
Many Broadway stars such as Cynthia Erivo, Alex Brightman, and Ann Harada addressed this issue through Twitter. Luckily, Wells Fargo saw the tweets from these stars and others. They made this apology shown below.
Thankfully, they were kind enough to notice their mistake and made an apology. The theatre community accepts it but please just don't do that again, Wells Fargo. Sincerely the Broadway and theatre community.
