To All My Texans: Welcome To Wurstfest
Wurstfest

Every year in New Braunfels, Texas people from all over come together to celebrate sausage, beer, and the wonderful German culture. Wurstfest is a ten-day festival on the Wurstfest Grounds in Landa Park during the first week of November where people are encouraged to wear dirndls (traditional feminine dress), lederhosen (leather shorts with suspenders) and crazy hats. So, to those who have never heard of this crazy festival before, welcome to Wurstfest, the annual event where you can drink beer by the pitcher and eat as much sausage-on-a-stick as you can consume.

Beer

There are 55 different types of beer at Wurstfest. All come in either a souvenir cup or pitcher. They have everything from craft and import selections to Oktoberfest beers as well. Prices vary on type of beer. Domestic is around 21 tickets (or dollars) and imported is around 29 tickets.

Food

In 1966, visitors consumed over five tons of sausage. Now, 50 years later, there is no telling how much food is consumed by all of the people in attendance. Luckily, there is more food at Wurstfest than a person could ever ask for. There are around 36 booths to choose from, all with their own twists and tasty treats to enjoy.

Entertainment

There is a variety of entertainment to enjoy at Wurstfest. There are five live music stages where performers play traditional German tunes and dance to polka. Besides live music, there is also a carnival on the grounds and shops to buy your own Wurstfest merchandise.

Attire

One of my favorite things about Wurstfest is all of the crazy clothes and costumes people come dressed up in. Mostly it’s the outrageous hats. However, others also come decked out in traditional German attire. There will be people dressed in dirndls with braids or in full lederhosens, suspenders and all.

Services

In 2013, Wurstfest updated their online website to allow customers to purchase admission and drink tickets online, as well as download coupons and schedules. Since the digital push and the expansion of the grounds in 2014, Wurstfest hasn’t been bigger. In 2015 the festival was so popular, tickets sold out. With that many people, it means that many services needed to make the event flow smoothly. Visitors can take the Wurst Wagon to pick up people locally or even large groups from their own private locations. People can park, for free, at two different locations where the Wurst Wagon will pick you up and take you to the festival. $30 includes the ride and admission fee.

Well all those fundraisers and marketing should would be a waste then wouldn't they?

11 Things Summer Nannies Can Relate To

There are plenty of obstacles that come when taking care of kids, but it's a very rewarding experience.

As a college student, being a nanny over the summer is both enjoyable and challenging. Underneath the seemingly perfect trips to the pool or countless hours spent playing Monopoly are the obstacles that only nannies will understand. Trading in your valuable summer vacation in return for three months spent with a few children less than half your age may seem unappealing, but so many moments make it rewarding. For my fellow summer nannies out there, I know you can relate.

There are a lot of really easy, common names in the U.S. and while many of those simple names have different spellings, most of the time, pronunciation is not an issue that those people need to worry about. However, others are not as fortunate and often times give up on corrections after a while. We usually give an A+ for effort. So, as you could probably imagine, there are a few struggles with having a name that isn’t technically English. Here are just a few…

Daydreaming

day·dream (ˈdāˌdrēm/): a series of pleasant thoughts that distract one's attention from the present.

Daydreams, the savior of our life in class. Every type of student in the classroom does it at least once, but most cases it is an everyday event, especially in that boring class -- you know the one. But what are we thinking while we are daydreaming?

Puerto Ricans. They are very proud people and whether they were born on the island or born in the United States by Puerto Rican parent(s). It gets even better when they meet another fellow Puerto Rican or Latino in general. You’ll know quickly if they are Puerto Rican whether the flag is printed somewhere on their person or whether they tell you or whether the famous phrase “wepa!” is said.
