Welcome To Wilson

To those first time students at Wilson college. Welcome to your crash course!

Depending on the atmosphere you are used to, Wilson College can be quite a culture shock in many ways. First, the campus and population is very small, you will get to know people, and plenty of people will know of you (some you haven't even met). It can be negative or positive depending on how you take it. It will be really easy to meet people and make friends, but it can cause drama. You can also feel like you are in the middle of nowhere at first, due to there not seeming to be a lot to do in the little town Wilson is nestled in, but trust me, anyone who goes away to college feels like they have nothing to do. There are a variety of stores nearby, and you're not too far for a day trip to Washington DC or Gettysburg. If you look hard enough there is plenty to do and Chambersburg is actually a quaint, fun town to walk around on the weekends.

Another shock is that the entire school is practically a sorority. You will soon find out about the quirky traditions that the school holds. (Even's Rule!) You don't have to participate, I honestly think a few are a little odd, but they can also be extremely fun, banner stealing is one of my particular favorites. A lot of the students that attend Wilson genuinely believe that the school is haunted. Ask a few people and I'm sure you will get some ghost stories out of the students and even the staff. There is even a ghost hunters show that takes place in the school (Paranormal Afterparty.) I haven't seen any evidence to prove it, but I don't believe in such things anyway. The longer you are at Wilson the more you see the strange traditions and how different the school is from other colleges.

If you are expecting to go to a party school this is definitely not it, in my opinion it is a good thing. If you really want to go party head on over to Shippensburg University (Ship to most people), and enjoy the party scene. Wilson is really a very quiet and relaxing campus, especially on the weekends, probably due to a lack of partying. Some people like that aspect of Wilson, others don't.

While Wilson may not be the most lively place, academically it is a good school, from what I have seen at least. You are going to get individualized attention from your professors, as well as a great work environment. You can tell the teachers are really there to help you, so work your hardest, and make the best out of what you have.

This is not a fully encompassing rundown and it may be a little biased due to my experiences thus far at Wilson. It is just meant to be a little rundown of the campus and atmosphere you are about to step into, only a brief overview. Wilson may take a little adjusting, but it is a great school and a good atmosphere to live in. So, enjoy the uniqueness of Wilson, and welcome freshman Phoenix.

Summer: a time (usually) free from school work and a time to relax with your friends and family. Maybe you go on a vacation or maybe you work all summer, but the time off really does help. When you're in college you become super close with so many people it's hard to think that you won't see many of them for three months. But, then you get that text saying, "Hey, clear your schedule next weekend, I'm coming up" and you begin to flip out. Here are the emotions you go through as your best friend makes her trip to your house.

Winter break is over, we're all back at our respective colleges, and the first week of classes is underway. This is a little bit how that week tends to go.

The professor starts to go over something more than the syllabus

You get homework assigned on the first day of class

There are multiple group projects on the syllabus

You learn attendance is mandatory and will be taken every class

Professor starts chatting about their personal life and what inspired them to teach this class

Participation is mandatory and you have to play "icebreaker games"

Everybody is going out because its 'syllabus week' but you're laying in bed watching Grey's Anatomy

Looking outside anytime past 8 PM every night of this week

Nobody actually has any idea what's happening this entire week

Syllabus week is over and you realize you actually have to try now...or not

Now it's time to get back into the REAL swing of things. Second semester is really here and we all have to deal with it.

panera bread

Whether you specialized in ringing people up or preparing the food, if you worked at Panera Bread it holds a special place in your heart. Here are some signs that you worked at Panera in high school.

1. You own so many pairs of khaki pants you don’t even know what to do with them

Definitely the worst part about working at Panera was the uniform and having someone cute come in. Please don’t look at me in my hat.

7 Ways to Make Your Language More Transgender and Nonbinary Inclusive

With more people becoming aware of transgender and non-binary people, there have been a lot of questions circulating online and elsewhere about how to be more inclusive. Language is very important in making a space safer for trans and non-binary individuals. With language, there is an established and built-in measure of whether a place could be safe or unsafe. If the wrong language is used, the place is unsafe and shows a lack of education on trans and non-binary issues. With the right language and education, there can be more safe spaces for trans and non-binary people to exist without feeling the need to hide their identities or feel threatened for merely existing.
