It's officially application season. Resume printing centers have lines out the door, every library private room is reserved for Skype and phone interviews, stress levels have never been higher. We all have our perfectly rehearsed introductions, summing our entire lives up into an elevator pitch. My name, major, hometown and most marketable achievement are all that matter right now.
I've lost count of how many summer internships I've applied for. But this week, I got to start writing for The Odyssey! This is my first time writing for an audience, and I'm so incredibly excited, and so grateful for this opportunity.
I'll be the first to say it: I have absolutely no idea what I'm doing. I have absolutely no idea what I want to do. But it's okay. It's normal. I'm 21-years-old and don't know what I want to do next year, much less the next 40 years.
So here I am, still applying for internships. I'll be here, every week for the foreseeable future, writing about something different. The only advice I can offer now is: Don't worry about sending in as many applications as you can. Put the work into the applications that excite you, not the ones that will make you dread going in every day.
The season of stress continues, so let me leave you with some reminders:
It's okay to take a day off. Take a mental health day. Don't set an alarm. Make a good breakfast. Binge-watch your favorite TV show. Put your phone on 'Do Not Disturb' and put it down somewhere. Spend the day alone or with your best friends.
My bottom line is: everyone is different. Everyone's timeline is different. Everyone's self-care is different. Take care of yourself, and don't let anyone tell you how that's done. If you haven't heard it in a while, I believe in you!
