Welcome To #Adulting

What happens when you hit that point where you finally graduate from high school or college and you are thrust into the real world? In today’s society, there is really only one way to handle this situation. You do your best at this whole #Adulting thing.

What is #Adulting you ask? According to Urban Dictionary- Adulting (v): to do grown up things and hold responsibilities such as, a 9-5 job, a mortgage/rent, a car payment, or anything else that makes one think of grown ups. When used in a sentence: Jane is adulting quite well today as she is on time for work promptly at 8am and appears well groomed. Basically, #Adulting is where achieve a level of success at something you generally consider to be done by adult humans. Examples: Paying your credit card bill. Cooking dinner with fresh foods (microwave dinners or Kraft Mac N Cheese does not count), doing laundry (Yes, I mean washing, drying, folding, and putting them away.) These are just a few instances where the term #Adulting is an appropriate descriptor. These might seem like simple tasks to some, while to others they might seem outrageously unachievable. Either way, these jobs are always finished with a distinct sense of accomplishment. It can be hard to grow up. Trying to balance your bank account, and pay for groceries, and work to pay for those groceries and rent and car payments...well, it is a lot to take on, especially if you did not grow up in a household where you were taught how to do these things. It overwhelming at first, no matter how well prepared you are. This is where #Adulting is helpful. So what if you proved you weren’t a child by choosing to have whatever you wanted for dinner, and proved you weren’t an adult yet by your dinner choice being an entire tub of ice cream? For those moments where you’re left stuck in the middle, you are #Adulting.

Do not be discouraged by this. Did you do that laundry slightly wrong and shrink one of your favorite sweaters? Oh well, you did it while you were #Adulting. Did you show up for work on time by foregoing the shower and opting for dry shampoo in your hair and doing your make up at the red lights on the way in? #Adulting. Are you just not ready to admit that you are too old to be relying on your parents? That’s okay. Just start with baby step. You go buy that Kraft Mac N Cheese. But maybe while you’re eating it, go on Google, or Pinterest and find a recipe for Homemade Mac N Cheese. Maybe the next time you go to the store, you’ll feel brave enough to buy those ingredients and give it a go. #Adulting takes some practice. It is a learning process, just like everything else in life. Don’t be afraid to set yourself free and show the world just how good at #Adulting you are!

As college students, we are all familiar with the horror show that is course registration week. Whether you are an incoming freshman or selecting classes for your last semester, I am certain that you can relate to how traumatic this can be.

1. When course schedules are released and you have a conflict between two required classes.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
