For as long as mankind has existed, division of ideas and principles has been one of it's most recurring characteristics. And rather than delving into the problematic system and the areas that cause violent separation, this discussion will take to a more personal and subjective area; music.
There are so many divisions of music-listeners from your top-5 listener who listens to whatever is the most popular at the time, you have the classic rockers, the grungers, the classical-music listener... each one distinct, and completely set apart. There is one common similarity, though... and it has bothered me greatly. This is that each one believes in an ultimate superiority in their tastes and musical interests, as if the music preferred by anyone was by any means the "right" choice of musical interest. This is why I listen to "weird" music.
Now, I have never chosen music to listen to specifically for the reason that it was purely odd... but rather the music I listen to, it is based on the musicality (a mixture of emotion, talent, creativity, and self-identity as an artist). There are a plethora of gifted artists not defined by genre, not defined by style, or the complexity of the song itself. I have always listened to music based on how well the artist owned what they did and defined themselves as original artists. I listen to music that people deem weird all of the time because I have learned to appreciate music under context of knowing how much work can go into recording even the most simple of songs can change your perspective on what it takes to create and develop a song.
So to all those who cannot simply appreciate the music, go out into a recording studio and try it for yourself... or write a song... no one can truly appreciate the music that they are surrounded by until they can learn what it takes to make a song, from the lyricism to the chord progression to the song structure to the ability to play with other artists simultaneously without a break in metrics.. grungers drool over screams that take careful effort and practice, classical artists are in love with the expertise of technique as well as the mastery and fluency of an instrument.
Each genre has something to stand out and be proud of that an artist in another field couldn't accomplish. Limiting yourself to stylistic superiority is closing yourself off to wonderful music discoveries that you could fall in love with, but may be too stubborn in this moment to let yourself enjoy it for what it truly is. Art. The expression of an individual who cannot find a better way to express who they are. This is why I listen to "weird" music. My music choice isn't odd, it simply is open and refined... I care about whether or not the artist cared about their music, the passion, the emotion.
