If you do not already know, Trump has pardoned the former Arizona sheriff Joe Arpaio. Arpaio is best known for his “outspoken” stance on illegal immigration, racial profiling, and his abysmal record on prisoner’s rights and safety. Needless to say, it is obvious why he is as controversial as he is. Many of us are not surprised by Trump’s pardon, in fact we predicted it; Trump is being Trump. Although our prediction is accurate and we are pleasantly satisfied that we are right (again), this should in no way be tolerated. Trump’s actions insofar have been getting an order worse, since the day he decided to run for president.
Thirteen days ago, a young woman died at the hands of a neo-nazi driving a car through a crowd of counter-protestors. Trump failed to properly denounce the actions and beliefs of those affiliated in the protest, citing “both sides” as responsible for the event that took place. Four days ago at his Arizona rally, trump had the gall to attack the media for their proper reporting on his speech; he accused them of leaving out parts of his speech denouncing the KKK and neo-nazis. Not only was he wrong, he displayed a (disturbing) lack of awareness; you are not being castigated because you did not denounce the alt-right, it is because you placed the blame on both sides when one party was responsible for the death of the young woman. This Friday, Trump has pardoned a sheriff who has routinely violated the constitutional rights of prisoners and the civil rights of Latinos. Trump has gone from even remotely denouncing the alt-right to pardoning their crimes in two weeks. We can only imagine how far Trump will sink, and it seems as those speculations can very well become reality.
Our only hope to combat this rapid shift towards racism and bigotry is not only to continue to lambaste his large aberrations, but to remain intolerant towards them. To treat every one of his predictable decisions as novel anomalies.
