I've come to realize that few things are better than writing from the road. Especially, as in this case, on the way home from a great trip. For fall break this year I went with my boyfriend to visit his family in Atlanta, GA, and while the whole trip was better than I could have imagined, what I knew I had to write about was the food and entertainment. Two places stick out most in my mind that I would recommend to anyone going to visit Atlanta soon. The first was TopGolf, a three level driving range with targets that let players choose different games based on skill level. It opened up this year, with locations in Texas and Virginia preceding it and more to come. Take it from the person least likely to enjoy golf that you will ever meet: this was so fun, and I can't wait to go back (seriously hoping one opens up in Charleston someday soon).
On the other hand, if golf really isn't your thing but you happen to be along for the ride, then come to hit a few balls and stay for the food. An open air bar with great appetizers, wings and sandwiches was the perfect way to spend an afternoon. If you're looking for dinner then check out Hop Alley in Alpharetta. Their appetizers and small plates are even better when you share them with a group, and the pork belly, roast quail and fried cheese curds are all sure to please. While you're there, be sure to sample flight of beers made in house. The brewing system is right behind the bar after all, so you can see all the action of how that IPA was made.
From time to time we all feel the need to get out of Charleston, and a trip to Atlanta was exactly what I needed to decompress from what's been a busy semester so far. While TopGolf and Hop Alley were definite hits in my mind, I hope I get the chance to go back and try some of the spots we missed. Apparently, as far as diners go, The Varsity has an orange dreamsicle that can't compare.
