The first half of my week without social media.

One Week Without Social Media (Part 1 Of 2)
Javona

I often find myself in a situation where I sit and debate on deleting my social media and just put time into validating my existence. Validating my existence can mean several things. To me, it means spending time alone. Creating a unique image for myself. I often find myself on social media when I'm bored or just for the heck of it. For the past week I have put more time into things that I love to do to express my hidden creativity. I deleted my social media apps as an experiment identifying what I can do outside of these social dominating applications.

Day 1: Friday (August 12, 2016)

Friday was my first day social media free. I'm visiting my dad for the weekend. He lives in Beaumont, California and there's not much to do out here. The city is very quiet and country like, but that didn't urge me to hop on twitter and tweet about it. Instead, I meditated and listened to City and Colour. I attempted to sing along to it, but for those of you who know me, you'd know I still need some improvement on my higher pitches. Later throughout the day I wrote a little in my journal and skyped my friends whom I will soon be living with in a few days. As the evening went on, I noticed how fast my day was moving. I had so many available options to do outside of social media that it made me tired. I ended up falling asleep around 1:00 AM due to watching Olympic reruns.

Day 2: Saturday (August 13, 2016)

Friday was pretty smooth. I woke up and made myself cereal. I turned on nettlfix and decided to watch Orange Is The New Black. Around 2:00 PM I decided to walk my dog. I took her to the park. The weather was really nice, I wondered what I'd be doing right now if I was on my phone. But for once, I felt free and with nature. The soft breezes and the view of the mountains was so refreshing. When I got home I took a shower and decided to watch the olympics wit my dad. We bonded since neither of our eyes were glued to our phones.

Day 3: (August 14, 2016)

Today has been the slowest so far. I woke up, did some chores, and watched church on the computer with my dad. I downloaded new music on my mac which kept me busy for at least 2 hours. I'm taking my hands on the wheel test tomorrow and I'm super nervous! I've been watching YouTube videos all day on tips and tricks on passing. Now, I'm heading over to my nephews house and taking him out for ice-cream with my sister in law.

So far, my experiment is working. We'll see how long it lasts. See you next week!

7 Ways to Make Your Language More Transgender and Nonbinary Inclusive

With more people becoming aware of transgender and non-binary people, there have been a lot of questions circulating online and elsewhere about how to be more inclusive. Language is very important in making a space safer for trans and non-binary individuals. With language, there is an established and built-in measure of whether a place could be safe or unsafe. If the wrong language is used, the place is unsafe and shows a lack of education on trans and non-binary issues. With the right language and education, there can be more safe spaces for trans and non-binary people to exist without feeling the need to hide their identities or feel threatened for merely existing.

Blair Waldorf
Stop Hollywood

For those of you who have watched "Gossip Girl" before (and maybe more than just once), you know how important of a character Blair Waldorf is. Without Blair, the show doesn’t have any substance, scheme, or drama. Although the beginning of the show started off with Blair’s best friend Serena returning from boarding school, there just simply is no plot without Blair. With that being said, Blair’s presence in the show in much more complex than that. Her independent and go-getter ways have set an example for "Gossip Girl" fans since the show started and has not ended even years after the show ended. Blair never needed another person to define who she was and she certainly didn’t need a man to do that for her. When she envisioned a goal, she sought after it, and took it. This is why Blair’s demeanor encompasses strong women like her.

Singing is something I do all day, every day. It doesn't matter where I am or who's around. If I feel like singing, I'm going to. It's probably annoying sometimes, but I don't care -- I love to sing! If I'm not singing, I'm probably humming, sometimes without even realizing it. So as someone who loves to sing, these are some of the feelings and thoughts I have probably almost every day.
