A Week Roundup

Receiving news in today’s day and age is easier than it’s ever been. Top headlines from around the world are literally a click away. However, with so much news on our computer dashboards, Twitter Timelines, and Facebook Newsfeeds it becomes a little difficult to keep up with everything that’s going on at the moment. So for those who missed out on the top headlines of the past week here is a little roundup for you.

Kanye West

If you live under a rock, or don’t use Twitter (live under a rock) you may not have witnessed the social media spat between Ye and Wiz Khalifa. It was truly the adult, celebrity version of one of those early high school Twitter fights you would scroll through when you were younger while you ate a bowl of Captain Crunch. Except it was pretty much one-sided. The Twitter feud was sparked when Kanye changed the title of his upcoming album from SWISH to WAVES. Wiz Khalifa, who is a big Max B fan, then tweeted “Please don’t take the wave. Max B is the wavy one. He created the wave. There is no wave without him.” After a few more tweets about the wave movement Wiz then tweeted “Hit this KK and become yourself,” a reference to his own strain of marijuana, Khalifa Kush. However, Kanye thought that by “KK” Wiz had just mentioned his wife Kim Kardashian and took incredible offense to the mention of his wife in a public forum…because that has never happened before. Kanye then flew off the handle and launched a near 20 tweet assault/rant at Wiz Khalifa. The rant included everything from a tweet ridiculing Wiz’s choice of pants to a tweet claiming he owned Wiz’s child that he has with Kanye’s ex, Amber Rose, who made quite an appearance herself in this whole Twitter feud. In the end, Kanye deleted all of his tweets and apologized for, what now, looks like a massive publicity stunt to promote his upcoming album. Kanye never ceases to amaze.

B.O.B

Was this a week designated for rappers to make fools of themselves? Atlanta rapper, Bobby Ray A.K.A B.O.B, shocked the world this past week by declaring that the world is actually flat. Yes, it appears years of accepted scientific fact and conventional wisdom/common-sense aren’t enough for B.O.B. and it makes one of the biggest tracks from his last album aptly title, Out of My Mind, make a lot more sense now. B.O.B tweeted, “No matter how high in elevation you are... the horizon is always eye level ... sorry cadets... I didn't wanna believe it either.” No one doubts that B.O.B is high, just not in terms of actual altitude. In response to one particular naysayer that said, “That awkward moment when people like @bobatl think they know more than an astrophysicist just because they read an article online” Bobby Ray tweeted, “that awkward moment when you realize you’ve been indoctrinated into a heliocentric belief system.” Even world-renowned astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson took to Twitter to try to convince B.O.B he was wrong, but the rapper wasn’t having it. In the end, I believe we should just chalk this up to a publicity stunt as well and just keep Bobby in our thoughts and prayers. Bless his heart.

Oregon Militia

The Oregon Militia that occupied the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge met its end this past week. The group, led by the Bundy brothers, was on its way to an anti-government last Tuesday when they were intercepted by the FBI. Shots ended up being fired and LaVoy Finicum, also known as Tarp Man, lost his life. The FBI arrested a total of 7 people linked with the militia and said they are being charged with a "federal felony charge of conspiracy to impede officers of the United States from discharging their official duties through the use of force, intimidation, or threats."

Zika Virus

In 1947, a virus was isolated in Uganda’s Zika Forest where researchers were studying yellow fever where the earliest known infection was identified in an African macaque. The infection eventually moved onto people, not just in Africa, but in Asia as well. Fast forward 60 years from the first known case and nearly a hundred cases of the virus surfaced on a small Pacific island. Six years later, the virus surfaced in French Polynesia sending some 28,000 individuals into medical care. Then last year, the virus surfaced in the Americas when some cases were identified in northeastern Brazil. Further bad news came in October 2015 when doctors found there was a drastic increase of microcephaly cases among infants born to mothers in the northeast. Zika infections have been brought back to the Minnesota, New York, Hawaii and a few other US states. While the Zika Virus is dangerous there should be no widespread panic as of yet. The CDC and other health organizations are meeting February 1 to decide what to do next.

So, that is my little round up for the past week and hopefully you learned something new.
