A Week In A College Town

But the real question is, if you don’t go to college in a college town, did you really go to college?

If you didn’t post it on Instagram did it really happen? If it isn’t Facebook official is it really official? But the real question is, if you don’t go to college in a college town, did you really go to college?

From student discounts to the school spirit, a college town has a sense of community that just isn’t found in large cities. So, welcome to small town USA, population 20,000…

Smack dab in the middle of the city is a college surrounded by local business all selling gear for the first football game. The games are advertised on large billboards and Jumbo-trons throughout the city. Its 10am on Game day, frat boys are setting up tents and pulling out the first beers, corn-hole games begin and the tailgaters start to arrive. Only the strong survive the day. The sounds from the stadium roll into the tailgate lots as students make their way to the student section. Every single person in town is at the game and they are sporting the home team colors. Screaming as loud as they can while the players run through a cloud of smoke onto the field. You grab an overpriced drink at the concession stand and push your way back into the student section. People are getting rowdier and rowdier as the game continues and by the end of the game, if you aren’t friends with the drunk guy you’re rubbing shoulders with then you’re doing it all wrong.

The next day the entire town is silent while the recovery process begins.

Walking through campus on Monday morning you are bound to see at least 10 people you know who are wearing the same shirt, carrying coffee, and who haven’t fully woken up yet.

Taco Tuesday is in the air as freshmen empty their piggy banks to pay for 50-cent tacos. The local pub is packed with people who just got off work. You show up with all your friends and wait in line to be seated. Then, the competition for ‘who can eat the most tacos’ begins and you order 12 tacos just to be shown up by your four other guy friends who order twice as many.

Walking into the library on a Wednesday, it’s packed with people wearing headphones with their eyes glued onto the computers. You snag the last table, which eventually fills with a million other people and is covered in papers. The likelihood of you getting anything done is slim to none.

Finally, you are in the home stretch to the weekend! You finish all your homework just in time to throw on your favorite cowgirl boots and drive 30 minutes to the only 18 and up country bar remotely close to you. All of the guys from the military base are there and they know how to dance. You dance for hours and hours without leaving the dance floor when finally the lights come on and you hurry to find your friends who have been looking for you for hours.

You sleep in today because who actually has class on Friday?

Who knows what the next week will look like but lets be honest what else is there to do?

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
