Wednesday vs. Friday

As per a conversation with the family that I nanny for.

Wednesday vs. Friday

We all know that Monday is rough. The weekend wasn't long enough, we went to bed too late, and Monday means another week of school, work, etc. It seems that Monday is always getting bashed, and everyone praises Friday, but hardly anyone ever talks about Wednesday. Also known as hump day, Wednesday is that mid-week reminder that you're still only halfway through the week. It's a cruel day, really.

The family that I nanny for always asks me about how I'm doing; how school and my other job are going for me. At this point, I know that I can be very honest with them. Mondays aren't even hard for me. No, no, no, it's Wednesday and Thursday that make me feel drained. It's like you're so close to finishing the week but it seems so far away. Last week, I went into work on Wednesday, and was asked: how are you doing, how was school? To which I responding by saying it was a long day, but I'm great...it's almost Friday! (I try to be positive but sometimes it is hard after a long day at school, followed by coming into work. I told my "nanny family" that Wednesdays and Thursdays are my version of Monday. They seemed super receptive of this comparison. When I went into work on Friday, my nanny family told me: Wow, you look so different on a Friday, compared to a Wednesday. Yes, this is all too true! Friday is my day of victory, because I know that I had the endurance to finish the week and all of the curveballs that came with it.

To make it from that Wednesday slump to Friday's glory, I try to do a few things during my day:

1. Stop and breathe.

DUH this seems super obvious but we hardly think about our breathing unless we're catching our breath after running or walking up several flights of stairs, or practicing yoga. It's nice to be in-tune with your body and intentionally focus on what it's doing for you.

2. NOT think.

When I get home from work, school, or clinic, I give myself some time to do absolutely nothing relating to academics or anything for that matter. Sometimes I sit on my couch and read a book that I have chosen, or I watch a twenty-minute episode of The Office. During this time I absolutely do not think about all of the things that I have to get done. If I don't take care of myself and my sanity, I won't be able to get anything done.

3. Play with my hair.

Okay, I'll admit this one is a bit odd. Have you ever sit on your bed or in a chair and lowered your head so that you were looking down, and kind of just let it stay there for a minute or two? When I do that and start to play with my hair, I feel fantastic. It's simple, it's peaceful, and it's essentially something that can be done anywhere.

Whatever motivation you need to hear to get through the week, find it and stick with it. Whatever works, works!

Here are some Wednesday and Friday memes to hopefully get you through this week (or make you want to cry). :)

28 Daily Thoughts of College Students

"I want to thank Google, Wikipedia, and whoever else invented copy and paste. Thank you."

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate
Mental Floss

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."

It's the most wonderful time of the year! Christmas is one of my personal favorite holidays because of the Christmas traditions my family upholds generation after generation. After talking to a few of my friends at college, I realized that a lot of them don't really have "Christmas traditions" in their family, and I want to help change that. Here's a list of Christmas traditions that my family does, and anyone can incorporate into their family as well!

It’s here; that time of year when college students turn into preschoolers again. We cry for our mothers, eat everything in sight, and whine when we don’t get our way. It’s finals, the dreaded time of the semester when we all realize we should have been paying attention in class instead of literally doing anything else but that. Everyone has to take them, and yes, unfortunately, they are inevitable. But just because they are here and inevitable does not mean they’re peaches and cream and full of rainbows. Surviving them is a must, and the following five phases are a reality for all majors from business to art, nursing to history.
