I knew I needed glasses when I was in the third grade and I could not read the words on the board from the first row of desks. I have been wearing glasses and contacts for 12 years. 20 minus 12 leaves only eight years of my life that I did not needed something extra on my face to do normal activities.
Every morning I wake up and face the decision: do I want my phone to touch my nose as I check my social media accounts, or do I want to put on my glasses so I can hold my phone at a normal distance from my face? Next I have to decide if I want to put a finger in my eye or have to move my head if I want to see something to my side. Basically my choice is contacts or glasses?
Sometimes I think I can get around without either, but after running into a wall straight on I realize that sight is an important part of my survival.
In the middle of the night when I have to use the bathroom, I have become accustomed to feeling the wall to guide me there. I do not turn on the lights because I do not want the brightness in my eyes, but also it would not help since I usually forget to grab my glasses.
It is important to put makeup on after putting in my contacts because sometimes my eyes water. Also you have to worry about getting eye liner on the contact. Several times I have put a black line on my contact and had to take out the contact, clean it and put it back in. My eye teared up, ruined my makeup, and I was stuck in a cycle of cleaning and makeup.
I no longer attempt to put on makeup when wearing glasses because it only leads to disaster. My options are either having my nose touch the mirror or looking as though a child did my makeup. Neither one of those is a good option so instead I have decided that if I am going to wear my glasses I do not need to look that nice.
It also usually takes a couple of tries to put my contacts in because although there is not a right side of the contact to be on your eye, there is a wrong side. Sometimes after wearing a pair of contacts for a couple of weeks it takes several attempts to find the wrong side. After a long day of doing college work it is nice to give my eyes a rest and take the plastic off them directly and put glass slightly farther away from them. Although the real problem is that my glasses do not correct my double vision when I am really tired. Correct my double vision when I am really tired.
I am also not into wearing sunglasses because for three years my only option if I wanted to see, was to wear glasses. So I am not a fan of having plastic on my face.
After wearing glasses for a while and then putting in contacts, I often find myself trying to push them up and poking myself in the eye. I wanted to be cool and push my glasses up by the edge of the frame above my cheek instead of the bridge of my nose which ultimate leads to me not looking cool.
