Now I may be slightly biased in wanting the XFL to succeed in being a professional wrestling fan, but I'm also an optimist. I genuinely believe that the new XFL is something everyone should give a chance as its success could be beneficiary for everyone. As consumers of a product nothing helps us more than competition, and even if the XFL does not become the premier league of football, at the very least it can be an alternative for football fans.
The first iteration of the league was horrible and there is no doubting that. It had bad football, tried to mix pro wrestling with football, and was rushed out the door before it was ready. After watching the conference call Vince McMahon had regarding the announcement of the league, there is some reasons to think positively about the league.
McMahon has said that he will not be the front face of the league, unlike he was the first time around and according to him there will be no connection between the XFL and the WWE.
Additionally the league will be launching 2020 which will give a two year period to get everything ready unlike the one year period the league had to prepare in 2000.
The XFL, according to McMahon, will also look to address some issues many have had with the modern NFL, including long game times, complicated rules, the character of players and the inclusion of political/social issues.
On paper it all doesn't sound half bad. Quicker game times, faster paced football, games with better officials due to simplified rules, but that is the problem. It's on paper and you can poke holes in it.
While character issues have been a common issue with several NFL players, I doubt McMahon sticks to his proclamation that “even if you have a DUI” you will not play for an XFL team. Not only is that hypocritical considering the people McMahon has employed at the WWE but it would limit his player base to a degree. I like the idea of paying more attention to the character aspects of players but personally think disallowing players with any prior record at all is a bit far fetched.
I also wonder will the league be able to have any stars that will grab fans attention. No doubt a name like Tim Tebow could bring in fans, but a player like Johnny Manziel per McMahon’s standards won't even be eligible to play.
Nevertheless, for now the XFL is worth keeping an eye out for and has for now at least grabbed the football masses curiosity.
