This Christmas, basketball fans everywhere received another blessing when the Golden State Warriors played the Cleveland Cavaliers. Just like the majority of their meetings, the game lived up to its billings and came down to the last second.
People have floated around the idea that this is the best rivalry since Celtics-Lakers and I agree. Not only are they the two best teams in the league but by a wide margin too. We know Kevin Durant and Stephen Curry are the two best players in the West but Kyrie might be underrated. After Lebron, you could make a case that Kyrie is the second best player in the Eastern Conference and it is not a stretch. Add in Klay Thompson and Kevin Love and at least one of those six players always has a magical performance.
The 2016 NBA Finals might have been the greatest NBA Finals of all time and the follow up was also great. Golden State had a 14-point lead and looked on the verge of blowing out Cleveland on their home floor. And then, Cleveland turned it up a notch. Led by Kyrie Irving, Cleveland came all the way back and Irving hit the game-winner with three seconds left.
What makes it so special besides how talented both teams are is the emotion these teams bring out from each other. We know players like Draymond Green and Tristan Thompson are fiery characters but even Lebron James gets up for this. Lebron played 40 minutes while Kyrie played 44 minutes so it is not “just another game” like most games. Lebron and Kyrie have both sat out games this season to rest but played much more than usual against Golden State.
Barring something crazy, these two teams will meet in the Finals again and I am all for it. You can complain about parity but who else will deliver an entertaining series. The Clippers will lose in the second round, the Spurs do not have enough firepower, and the Raptors are the Raptors. Even if you are not the biggest NBA fan, it is hard to top the last three NBA MVP’s playing at the same time. The only way we could make this better is if Russell Westbrook somehow signed with Cleveland.
