We need Change now

My thoughts on current events

Before I address what I REALLY want to talk about, let me first address the rioting and looting. This is not the way to go about this. Vandalizing and stealing things won't bring the change this country needs. I agree that change needs to happen and it needs to happen now but if we turn to violence then we stoop the level of the people we are fighting against. Destroying your own communities is not the answer. I believe that peaceful protest is the only efficient way to bring change. I've been seeing a lot of people misquoting the words of Martin Luther King Jr. when they bring up the quote "A riot is the language of the unheard" and while it is true that MLK said that, a lot of people neglect to inform or are ignorant to the fact that in that same clip around 46 seconds later, he also says "I would hope that we can avoid riots because riots are self-defeating and socially destructive". On the topic of MLK, he has also said "Hate cannot drive out hate, only love can do that." I hope that change happens soon and I hope that we can end police brutality without stooping to their level. We need to advocate for peace. With that out of the way, lets talk about what I actually want to focus on. Let's start with the murder of Breonna Taylor. On March 13th 2020, Breonna Taylor was wrongly murdered by police. Dressed in plain clothing, the police invaded Taylor's apartment searching for two men who were drug dealers, who were said to have conducted business there, although that part was never confirmed. The police broke in and that's when Taylor's boyfriend, Kenneth Walker, started shooting at what was in his mind, intruders. Walker was simply trying to defend himself and his girlfriend from a perceived threat and in the ensuing gun fight, Breonna sadly lost her life. Kenneth Walker was later temporally charged with attempted murder despite the fact that police broke in the home without making themselves known as law enforcement. To make matters worse, even though the charges against Walker were dropped, his lawyer has said that there is a chance they could come back. The police murdered an innocent person and now there's a chance her boyfriend will end up in prison for trying to defend her and himself. This should not and cannot happen. The next story I want to talk about is the murder of Ahmaud Arbery. On February 23th 2020, Ahmaud was jogging in Glynn County, Georgia when a father and son shot and killed him while a neighbor filmed the murder. Ahmaud was murdered in cold blood. This is a cruel injustice that cannot go unpunished. A man's life was taken. He was not a threat to anybody and they killed him. Thankfully all three men were arrested and charged. The last situation I want to talk about is the murder of George Floyd. George Floyd was arrested and handcuffed on suspicion of forgery, a claim that still hasn't been proven, casting even bigger shadow on the situation. He was handcuffed and put on the ground while an officer knelt on his neck for 8 minutes and 46 seconds. This officer knelt on his neck on his neck for almost nine minutes while George was gasping for air and screaming out "I can't Breathe". Unfortunately, George lost his life due to this heinous and needless use of excessive force. When I reflect on these tragedies and countless others just like this, it anguishes me to my core. How can someone justify breaking into an apartment, shooting and killing an innocent person and then charging her boyfriend with attempted murder for simply trying to defend himself and his girlfriend from a perceived intruder and threat? How can someone be so heartless to murder a man while he was just jogging? How can someone be so heinous kneeling on a man's neck for almost nine minutes? How can someone in power lack so much empathy and compassion, that they do not get off a person's neck after they've cuffed? Not only that but how cruel does someone have to be to not get up even after he says "I can't breathe"? I am absolutely disgusted with the racism and the abuse of power by some who hold a badge. The duty of a police officer is to serve and protect and unfortunately some abuse their power and as a result innocent lives get taken too soon. This type of tragedy gets me thinking "If this is what we are seeing on camera, what kind of things are happening off camera? What kinds of things happen when there isn't a camera there to capture it?" We need change. This and situations like this need to stop. As a man of faith, all I can do is pray. I pray that I live to see the day where situations like this finally end. I pray for the grieving families of Ahmaud Arbary, George Floyd, Breonna Taylor and many others whose lives were taken due to police brutality and racism. Even though I am not a fan of our current president, I pray that God may bless him with the wisdom and leadership to deal with this situation with care and respect for all affected by this. I pray that we can one day live together without hatred. I pray for Unity. I pray for change. I pray for justice. I pray for healing. I pray for peace. Thank you for reading

As college students, we are all familiar with the horror show that is course registration week. Whether you are an incoming freshman or selecting classes for your last semester, I am certain that you can relate to how traumatic this can be.

1. When course schedules are released and you have a conflict between two required classes.

Bonus points if it is more than two.

Whether you're commuting or dorming, your first year of college is a huge adjustment. The transition from living with parents to being on my own was an experience I couldn't have even imagined- both a good and a bad thing. Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

As an English Major in college, I have a lot of writing and especially creative writing pieces that I work on throughout the semester and sometimes, I'll find it hard to get the motivation to type a few pages and the thought process that goes behind it. These are eleven thoughts that I have as a writer while writing my stories.

April Ludgate

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
